Evening Prayer 4.25.17, St. Mark the Evangelist

I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching.

Under Howard Galley, Brooke Bushong, Tom Tull and Ervin Faulkenberry, Church Army USA always began its lay evangelist training with Mark’s Gospel. It’s fast-paced, action-packed, and Mark arranged Christ’s healing miracles to lead to the climactic first-half passage in 8:27-30, where Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah.

You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8

As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Do your best to come to me soon, for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry.

This man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.

A housing project in East Chicago, Indiana was built on the site of an old smelter that contaminated the ground with lead, arsenic and other toxic chemicals; yesterday Scott Pruitt, the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency, visited the area, promising to talk to residents. He held a news conference that lasted two minutes, took no questions and refused to meet with those affected. The city has finally decided the complex must be bulldozed and residents relocated, but it has no place to send them except high-crime areas of Chicago, Illinois. Pruitt is an opponent of his own agency’s mission, and the result was a public donnybrook. Thousands of mostly Black and Latino residents are affected, of whom 40% are children. When the only defense against a toxic environment is an EPA warning sign in the front yard, there’s no defense at all. The new pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Battery Park City, Manhattan, New York, facing a daunting financial deficit, is moving to close St. Joseph’s Chapel despite its role as a shelter and staging area for first responders after 9/11. As the area rebuilt, the historic chapel was razed and relocated – to the ground floor of a new luxury apartment building at a rent of $264,000 a year. The landlord has offered a minor rent reduction, but parishioners are caught in the middle, as the neighborhood they helped rebuild after the terror attack is now pricing them out. (Chang W. Jesus spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent).

The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously rejected the legal claim that public schools are within the law when they provide only the most minimal education to children with disabilities. The law is vague, the court said, but for a reason: every child is different and education must be tailored to them. This is considered a victory for parents and children – but the court didn’t touch the question of whether parents can sue school districts for private tuition reimbursement when parents find a better alternative than the school offers. St. Richard became the Pope’s point man in clashes with King Henry III in championing Rome’s rights over the king, especially when clergy were charged with crimes or were victims of them. This was the same issue Thomas Becket faced earlier, and which would finally be decided by Henry VIII’s break with Rome. Richard focused on disciplining the clergy, especially by imposing Rome’s demand for celibacy, disinheriting and punishing their wives. The overturned chalice at the bottom of the window refers to a time Richard dropped the consecrated wine, though, it was claimed, miraculously none of it spilled. THE LESSONS
Jeremiah 24:1-10 (NRSV)

The LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the LORD. This was after King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem King Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim of Judah, together with the officials of Judah, the artisans, and the smiths, and had brought them to Babylon. One basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs, but the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. And the LORD said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I said, “Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten.”

What then are we to say? Gentiles, who did not strive for righteousness, have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; but Israel, who did strive for the righteousness that is based on the law, did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “See, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make people stumble, a rock that will make them fall, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Healing a blind man (Coptic Orthodox Church Fathers)

As Jesus walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. Keble College Chapel, Oxford University. Within three years of his death, the college bearing his name was founded “to give an education in strict fidelity to the Church of England.” He’d previously served the university as Professor of Poetry for ten years; his poem cycle “The Christian Year” was so beloved it went through 95 editions.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

CONFESSION OF SIN

Jeremiah 18:1-11 (NRSV)

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:  “Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.

Then the word of the LORD came to me: Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the LORD. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it. And at another moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it. Romans 8:1-11 (NRSV)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. John Keble, a parish priest and poet, kicked off the Oxford Movement with his Assize Sermon on “National Apostasy.” It reads today as reactionary, with its violent rejection of a fairly reasonable plan to make do with fewer bishops and dioceses in Ireland, which showed little inclination to accept the Church of England; but Keble took it as abandoning the catholicity of the Anglican Way. Anglo-Catholics heard his sermon as a cry of the heart and a call to arms, and their resulting blizzard of tracts led to a revival of a broader, deeper faith in England, and a reaffirmation of Anglo-Catholicism throughout Anglicanism.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfil now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
