A pleasant surprise of Broadway’s Tony Award nominations this week is how well “Suffs” did, Shaina Taub’s new musical about U.S. suffragists a century ago. The show received six nominations, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book for Taub (center); a supporting actress nod for Nikki M. James (second from right), who plays Black journalist Ida B. Wells; Best Costume Design (Paul Tazewell); and Best Director Leigh Silverman, who’s part of a record-breaking class of women directors. Produced by Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman, with advice from Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai, “Suffs” is finding an audience at the box office, with rising ticket prices and 78% capacity even amid a glut of new shows opening days before the Tony deadline. Sussman said, “I’ve been enamored with the suffrage movement since I was a kid and collaborating alongside so many brilliant women on ‘Suffs’ has been my passion project for the past decade. To have our original show about intergenerational social change and voting rights recognized as a nominee for Best Musical, especially in this intense election year, feels like a dream come true.” Ms. James has a good chance to win Best Featured Actress, and we won’t be surprised if Ms. Taub walks away with hardware too. THE LESSON
Matthew 7:1-12 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.

“Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.

“Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: When you enter the land that I am giving you and you reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest.

Zhang Yongzhen, the first scientist to publish a sequence of the COVID-19 virus in China, was locked out of his lab a week ago by Chinese authorities, who claimed it needed renovation; Sunday he started a sit-in outside in the rain, news that went viral. Wednesday China announced a tentative deal to allow him and his colleagues back in. This is only the latest in a series of persecutions China has put him through since 2020 to save Beijing from being blamed for the release of COVID, which has killed more than 7 million people worldwide as of Wednesday and sickened more than 700,000,000, according to the World Health Organization. The true number of infections and deaths will never be known, as politicians scramble to save themselves at the expense of their citizens. This latest ploy isn’t a smoking gun, it’s only circumstantial evidence – but the #1 suspect is still China. (Dake Kang/AP, 2020)

Why unleavened bread? Because speed was essential in the Israelites’ escape from Egypt. (The Daily Meal)

Leviticus 23:1-22 (NRSV)

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: These are the appointed festivals of the LORD that you shall proclaim as holy convocations, my appointed festivals.

Six days shall work be done; but the seventh day is a sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no work: it is a sabbath to the LORD throughout your settlements.

These are the appointed festivals of the LORD, the holy convocations, which you shall celebrate at the time appointed for them. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, there shall be a passover offering to the LORD, and on the fifteenth day of the same month is the festival of unleavened bread to the LORD; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not work at your occupations. For seven days you shall present the LORD’s offerings by fire; on the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation: you shall not work at your occupations.

The LORD spoke to Moses: Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: When you enter the land that I am giving you and you reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall raise the sheaf before the LORD, that you may find acceptance; on the day after the sabbath the priest shall raise it. On the day when you raise the sheaf, you shall offer a lamb a year old, without blemish, as a burnt offering to the LORD. And the grain offering with it shall be two-tenths of an ephah of choice flour mixed with oil, an offering by fire of pleasing odor to the LORD; and the drink offering with it shall be of wine, one-fourth of a hin. You shall eat no bread or parched grain or fresh ears until that very day, until you have brought the offering of your God: it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your settlements.

And from the day after the sabbath, from the day on which you bring the sheaf of the elevation offering, you shall count off seven weeks; they shall be complete. You shall count until the day after the seventh sabbath, fifty days; then you shall present an offering of new grain to the LORD. You shall bring from your settlements two loaves of bread as an elevation offering, each made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of choice flour, baked with leaven, as first fruits to the LORD. You shall present with the bread seven lambs a year old without blemish, one young bull, and two rams; they shall be a burnt offering to the LORD, along with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering by fire of pleasing odor to the LORD. You shall also offer one male goat for a sin offering, and two male lambs a year old as a sacrifice of wellbeing. The priest shall raise them with the bread of the first fruits as an elevation offering before the LORD, together with the two lambs; they shall be holy to the LORD for the priest. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and for the alien: I am the LORD your God.

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time comes. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

Broadway’s Tony Award nominations are out, with two new shows leading the way with 13 nominations each: “Hell’s Kitchen,” above, a musical based on the songs of Alicia Keys; and “Stereophonic,” a straight play with music, based on a fictional rock band in the 1970s. The two shows are in different categories and won’t compete with each other except for Best Original Score, which “Hell’s Kitchen” is expected to win. Even bigger news is the number of women directors, with 7 nominations across both categories; the previous record from 2022 was just 4. Carl Rohl-Smith: St. Athanasius. This Patriarch of Alexandria was the greatest defender of Christ as both Son and Equal of God the Father. He wrote, “The Savior of us all, the Word of God, in his great love took to himself a body and moved as Man among men, meeting their senses, so to speak, halfway. He became himself an object for the senses, so that those who were seeking God in sensible things might apprehend the Father through the works which he, the Word of God, did in the body.” He stands on Arius, whose heresy denying Christ’s equality with God was the biggest threat to Trinitarian belief in church history. The United Methodist General Conference is underway for the first time since 2019 in Charlotte, North Carolina and voting outcomes are very different this time. Delegates swept away denominational policies on gender and sexual orientation – including ordination – by voice vote, instead of the floor fights they’ve engaged in for the last 50 years. The U.S. branch lost 25% of its congregations in the intervening years under a generous plan that allows conservative congregations to leave with their assets intact. William of Tyre manuscripts: St. Athanasius at the Council of Nicaea. The Council, which produced the Creed we say at the Eucharist, was called because of an argument Athanasius led against a priest named Arius over the meaning of Christ’s Incarnation. The Council sided with Athanasius, which is why we say that Christ is “of one Being with the Father.” But the compromise achieved at Nicaea fell apart almost immediately and the argument continued until another council was called at Constantinople, which reaffirmed Nicaea overwhelmingly. Athanasius didn’t live to see it, but his arguments led to widespread consensus and continue to govern our theology today. Arianism still exists in various forms – it’s the belief system of Jehovah’s Witnesses – but the Trinity is embraced by the vast majority of Christians worldwide.

My foot has held fast to his steps;
I have kept his way and have not turned aside.
I have not departed from the commandment of his lips;
I have treasured in my bosom the words of his mouth.”

Congress reverenced the late Medal of Honor recipient Col. Ralph Puckett Jr. Monday with the lying-in of his remains in the Capitol, only the eighth time that’s occurred in U.S. history. He led 50 Army Rangers into battle for a strategic hill in Korea against 500 Chinese fighters in 1950; he was the last surviving Medal recipient of that war. He graduated from West Point in 1949 and volunteered with the 8th Army Ranger Company, which chose him as commander despite his inexperience. His men resisted multiple attacks from the Chinese batallion; Puckett sprinted across an open area to draw fire so that Rangers could target enemy machine-gunners. He was seriously wounded when two mortar shells landed in his foxhole, and ordered his troops to abandon him and save themselves. They refused and got him out of there with the help of courageous U.S. bomber pilots. He received the Medal from President Biden in 2021; eight other Medal recipients attended the Capitol ceremony, along with generations of his family members. (Shawn Thew, pool photo)

Philip and James the Less are commemorated together because we don’t know anything about them except what’s in the New Testament, and even that is subject to some confusion and scholarly disputes. It is possible that James the Less was the author of the Epistle of James, or at least of the original source material for it; Philip may have been the companion of Paul mentioned in some letters. In any event these two were numbered among the Apostles. (Concordia Koinonia)

Call us to have a loving heart that respects and uplifts the humanity and dignity of every person; open our ears to listen and learn from the experiences of people whose skin is different from ours. Open our mouths to speak up about injustices. Join us with others to work for racial equity and inclusion for all people. Amen.
