We do not know what he is talking about.” Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’? Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly of the Father. On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father.” His disciples said, “Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure of speech! Now we know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Our Bishop, Cate Waynick of Indianapolis, seated, is retiring in April after 20 years in the Big Mitre, and one of her last events was a retreat this weekend with the deacons of the diocese. She’s got other places to go besides the Big Chair, though. (Sean Sullivan)

Jesus said, “Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.”

The Falls Church (Episcopal) in Virginia is a large, prestigious parish which dates from American colonial days; George Washington was a church warden when the oldest extant building was erected in 1769. A town then grew up around the church and is now a sought-after suburb of Washington, D.C. That colonial building was erected by slaves, a fact predviously omitted from the parish history. Now they’ve decided to rectify that, with a ceremony February 11 dedicating a new plaque honoring the slave craftsmen and offering “gratitude and repentance.” This is part of a larger, long-running effort by the Episcopal Church to come to grips with its role in slavery and the slave trade. John Roberts was a priest and missionary among the Shoshone and Arapahoe Indians in Wyoming. He worked tirelessly establishing schools and churches from his arrival in 1883 to his death in 1949. Above in 1906, with students at his Fort Washakie Mission School for girls, which complemented a nearby government school for boys – raising a question, did the government not pay to educate girls?

I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Dr. Huston Smith has died, a leading expert in comparing the world’s religions. He made it his business to experience them all, from Tibetan monks to Hindu yogis and Sufi dervishes; he famously dropped acid with Timothy Leary in 1962. He loved the ecstatic experiences he had with hallucinogens, but having tried them he never wanted to go back. So he kept on looking for all the ways people reach for the Divine, and considered himself a worshiper though he did not wholly identify with any religion. The son of Methodist missionaries in Suzhou, China, he was ordained as well, and once was president of a Hindu philosophical society in St. Louis while pastoring a church there. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;

THE PRAYERS

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,

William Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois. He pastored a Lutheran church in Pittsburgh, so how did he establish so many institutions in other parts of the U.S.? He got help from deaconesses, who were often trained in hospital settings. More than a century later there are still Passavant clinics, senior centers and social service agencies, and many hospitals named Deaconess; Methodist sisters were already nurses when they began ministry training.

Compassionate God, who raises up ministers among your people: May we ever desire, like your servant William Passavant, to support the work of equipping the saints for service among the sick and the friendless; through Jesus Christ, the divine Physician, who has prepared for us an eternal home, and who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
