Evening Prayer 4.23.17, Second Sunday of Easter

I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

A nurse has become the acting Surgeon General of the United States, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams. The surgeon general is the principal spokesperson for the Public Health Service and operational head of its Commissioned Corps of uniformed officers, who form a non-combatant branch of the military. She is the first nurse to ascend to the position without an M.D., though a previous surgeon general was both a physician and a nurse. Her most famous predecessor was Dr. C. Everett Koop in the 1980s, who goaded Ronald Reagan and the nation as a whole to respond adequately to the AIDS crisis; others have led campaigns against smoking, obesity and other threats to human health.

Buffalo jumps, scattered throughout the western USA and Canada, are cliff formations where Native American hunters gathered, prayed, and then descended on their horses en masse into the valley below for community hunts of the sacred animals. This man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.

A housing project in East Chicago, Indiana was built on the site of an old smelter that contaminated the ground with lead, arsenic and other toxic chemicals; yesterday Scott Pruitt, the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency, visited the area, promising to talk to residents. He held a news conference that lasted two minutes, took no questions and refused to meet with those affected. The city has finally decided the complex must be bulldozed and residents relocated, but it has no place to send them except high-crime areas of Chicago, Illinois. Pruitt is an opponent of his own agency’s mission, and the result was a public donnybrook. Thousands of mostly Black and Latino residents are affected, of whom 40% are children. The new pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Battery Park City, Manhattan, New York, facing a daunting financial deficit, is moving to close St. Joseph’s Chapel despite its role as a shelter and staging area for first responders after 9/11. THE LESSON
Mark 11:27—12:12 (NRSV)

Again Jesus and the disciples came to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do them?” Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? Answer me.” They argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?”—they were afraid of the crowd, for all regarded John as truly a prophet. So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Then he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted. Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes’?”

When they realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd. So they left him and went away.

whom you have prepared for all the world to see:

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

It’s hard to overestimate the influence of English priest Thomas Bray on world evangelism, including the Church in America. He founded two missionary organizations, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (seal, above) and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, which have carried the crown of Christ for almost three centuries. The Bishop of London put him in charge of the churches in Maryland colony, which he visited long enough to develop great concern for the treatment of African slaves and Native Americans. He was a prison reformer; he suggested the founding of Georgia colony to Gen. Oglethorpe for the relief of honest debtors, which took place in 1732, and fifty years later the First Fleet arrived at Sydney, Australia. If your church has a parish library, that was his idea too. O God of compassion, you opened the heart of your servant Thomas Bray to the needs of the Church in the New World, and to found societies to relieve them: Make the Church diligent at all times to propagate the gospel, and to promote the spread of Christian knowledge; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for Protection

O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

We give you thanks, most gracious God, for the beauty of earth and sky and sea; for the richness of mountains, plains, and rivers; for the songs of birds and the loveliness of flowers. We praise you for these good gifts, and pray that we may safeguard them for our posterity. Grant that we may continue to grow in our grateful enjoyment of your abundant creation, to the honor and glory of your Name, now and for ever. Amen.

Evening Prayer 2.12.17, Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

Dr. Peter Mansfield has died, a British physicist whose discoveries about the magnetic properties of atoms led to the invention of magnetic resonance imaging, which eliminated exploratory surgery by allowing physicians to see pictures of the body’s internal organs. He built the first MRI machine in 1978 and was the first person exposed to the scanner, though some scientists worried that it could cause cardiac fibrillation. He later developed applications so clinicians could watch the beating of a heart and even chart the patterns of brain waves. He was knighted by the Queen in 1993 and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine ten years later. (David Jones/Press Association)

Where do we get the ashes for Ash Wednesday? Not from little elves in a secret workshop at the South Pole, but from the burning of last year’s fronds from Palm Sunday; put them in a household broiler pan and light them in the fireplace. Once burned, the ashes have to be pulverized (with, say, a mortar and pestle) so that a mess like this turns into a little dish of charcoal-looking dust to be smudged on people’s foreheads in the sign of the Cross.
