Howard E. Galley Jr. of the Church Army was the General Editor of the 1979 U.S. Book of Common Prayer and the man our Founding Vicar considers most responsible for it as the leading staff member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy. Hundreds of experts helped put it together – Leo Malania and H. Boone Porter were among the most influential; thousands of others helped shape it and hundreds of thousands tried out its various incarnations before the book was finalized. Josh Thomas was there, proofreading the Psalter under Howard’s supervision, and he saw and heard every day, his encyclopedic knowledge of the contents, his wisdom in guiding it to adoption, his defense of it when others tried to derail it, and Josh was present the first time its famous Eucharistic Prayer C, which Galley wrote, was publicly celebrated. Galley was a liturgical expert who mastered Church politics, which is what it takes to see a new book through to final approval, especially one which seemed like such a dramatic change at the time. The influence of the 1979 Book is worldwide, from Africa to New Zealand and Canada; while he was shepherding dozens of sniping committee members, jockeying consultants and wayward documents, he also served as Dean of the Church Army training institute at General Seminary, New York City. For a yearlong run Josh had a front row seat at the greatest show on Broadway, and Howard Galley was its undisputed star. The BCP makes us Episcopalians and without it we are just another church. The BCP is at the core of the Daily Office Network.

Matthew 11:25-30 (NRSV)
At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Gerlach Flicke, 1546: Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, general editor of the first Book of Common Prayer. As literature, it is often compared to the Authorized King James Bible and the works of William Shakespeare, which first appeared two centuries later. Indeed, Shakespeare borrowed Cranmer’s elegant, incisive phrases throughout his plays.

Give them true friends who understand them and knowledgeable therapists with competence and compassion. Soothe their worries, lift their spirits, help them to trust others, quiet their negative thinking, help them care for themselves, and give them peace; through the infinite mercy of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
