The First Book of Common Prayer, translated, compiled and edited by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, was published the Day after Pentecost, 1549. He consolidated the monastic Liturgy of the Hours into Morning and Evening Prayer for twice-daily public use, and returned the liturgy of the Eucharist to the common language “understanded of the people” instead of Latin. This book, as much as any royal decree, made the Church of England and the Anglican Communion. (patheos.com)

1 John 5:13-21 (NRSV)
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. If you see your brother or sister committing what is not a mortal sin, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one—to those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin that is mortal; I do not say that you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal.
We know that those who are born of God do not sin, but the one who was born of God protects them, and the evil one does not touch them. We know that we are God’s children, and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

The first Book of Common Prayer for the new United States was produced in 1789, the same year George Washington took office as the first President. It eliminated prayer for a foreign king; added prayers for the new nation’s president, Congress and courts; and adopted the Scottish Prayer Book’s prayer of consecration at Holy Communion, as agreed when Scotland consecrated the first American bishop, Samuel Seabury. The Scottish epiclesis has remained throughout several revisions.

Almighty and everliving God, whose servant Thomas Cranmer, with others, restored the language of the people in the prayers of your Church: Make us always thankful for this heritage; and help us so to pray in the Spirit and with the understanding, that we may worthily magnify your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Collect for Guidance
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In an effort to pare down our gun violence statistics, I will highlight one incident of gun violence from the previous week. If you happen to know of one that needs our attention you can always email me links or information about that particular incident.
This weeks spotlight: May 18th Saturday at 2:45 am in Columbus, Ohio at East 5th Avenue and Summit St. Between the Italian Village and Weinland Park neighborhoods. Three people were killed and three others were wounded. The dead ranged in age from 18 to 27. Numerous shell casings and multiple firearms were found left at the scene. Authorities said “It is unclear what led to the shooting.” No suspect information has been released and police are asking for the public’s help in solving this multiple homicide.
Those killed by gunfire increased by 397. Those injured increased by 719
A Prayer to End Gun Violence
O Lord our God, we pray for the victims of the other pandemic, as gun violence ravages our homes, our streets, our businesses, schools and houses of worship. We pray for the children killed and injured, for their families and classmates. We pray for teenagers gunned down before their lives have really started. We pray for police officers who keep fighting a never-ending battle, while trying to keep themselves and everyone else safe; and we pray for an end to racial discrimination in law enforcement. We pray for all who are depressed or mentally ill, wanting to hurt themselves or others, in a nation where guns are everywhere. We pray for the victims of crime who are forced to defend themselves and their loved ones. We pray for anti-violence activists and community leaders, in a time when new methods of protest and reform must be created. Let your demands for justice and cries for peace be heard, O Lord, in our legislative chambers and in our hearts; may your healing grace overtake this land, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
