A teenage boy was arrested Sunday at an Orthodox Assyrian Church in suburban Sydney, Australia, where he allegedly stabbed a bishop and a priest at the altar, then was subdued by parishioners, who chopped off his fingers. (The clergy’s wounds are not life-threatening.) Information about the teen’s motive is sketchy and the police investigation is being questioned. U.S. media suggested that the bishop is controversial; he openly evangelizes Jews and Muslims in livestream video, spreads Covid misinformation and sermonizes against LGBTs, whom he blames for the rise of Transgenderism and same-sex marriage. Later reports indicate the boy’s motive was likely a defense of Islam, though his father saw no signs that his son was going radical. Authorities called it an act of terrorism, but the most telling fact is this: after the boy was captured, the bishop’s parishioners rioted against police and injured several of them; they wanted to hurt the suspect, while police had to protect him from the mob. Then God spoke all these words: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.

I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. Miguel Cabrera, c. 1750: Juana Inés de la Cruz. She was the illegitimate daughter of a Spanish sea captain in colonial Mexico, raised by her mother and maternal grandfather, a wealthy man who owned 4000 books and encouraged the girl’s education; as a young woman she dressed as a man to try to gain admission to a university in Mexico City. When that didn’t work she became a nun and continued her private studies, becoming a lady-in-waiting of the Spanish colonial viceroy’s wife. She mastered languages, theology and philosophy, and became famous for her writing in Spanish, Latin and Aztec. She won many followers but was eventually suppressed by her bishop for being an educated woman, even though he agreed with many of her opinions on the environment, feminism and male hypocrisy, which threatened the church hierarchy. She gave up her writing and nursed other nuns during an outbreak of plague, resulting in her own death. Few of her writings survive, but centuries later her reputation is restored and she is recognized as a major writer of the Mexican colonial period. (Museo Nacional de Historia)

Almighty God, Source of all knowledge, we give you thanks for the witness of your servant Juana Inés de la Cruz in her fierce passion for learning and creativity. A Litany in the Aftermath of Gun Violence

Giver of Life and Love, you created all people as one family and called us to live together in peace. Surround us with your love as we face again the tragedy of gun violence.
For the children and adults who were killed last week, the brave ones who died protecting others, the many who were wounded and hospitalized, the traumatized, grieving survivors, and those known to you alone, Loving God,
Make us instruments of your peace.
God of Righteousness, you have granted our leaders, especially our President, our Governors, the members of Congress and of our courts and legislatures, power and responsibility to protect us, and to uphold our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Strengthen their devotion to our common life and give them clarity of purpose.
For all who bear such responsibility, for all who struggle to discern what is right in the face of powerful political forces, Loving God,
Make us instruments of your peace.
God of Compassion, we give you thanks for first responders: police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and all those whose duties bring them to the streets, the schools, the malls and the homes where the carnage of gun violence takes place every day. Give them courage and sound judgment in the heat of the moment and grant them compassion for the victims.
For our brothers and sisters who risk their lives and serenity as they rush to our aid, Loving God,
Make us instruments of your peace.
