There is a massive black hole at the center of our home constellation the Milky Way, and scientists are just now seeing it – showing it wasn’t easy to get this photo, released May 12. It’s a composite of images from 8 synchronized radio telescopes around the world – er, planet Earth. The black hole is 4,000,000 times bigger than our sun. It’s that big black spot in the center, halfway between Sagittarius and Scorpius constellations, which are lit up. Most people think black holes are scary and swallow spaceships with a giant sucking sound, but scientists told AP ours is a “gentle giant” practically starving. Still, it’s okay to warn the kids to steer clear – and Hollywood, get to work! (Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration)

Matthew 5:27-37 (NRSV)
Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
“Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.”

The smartest person in the room: Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor and the first woman cabinet member in U.S. history, stands directly behind President Franklin D. Loving God, we bless your Name for Frances Perkins, who in faithfulness to her baptism envisioned a society in which all may live in health and decency: Help us, following her example and in union with her prayers, to contend tirelessly for justice and for the protection of all, that we may be faithful followers of Jesus Christ; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
