St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina, one of the last two remaining black Episcopal colleges in the U.S., has won another year of probation from the Southern Association, its accrediting body, which two months ago threatened to close it. The university, which has been underfunded since its inception, celebrated its 150th anniversary this year. Accreditors want to see more improvement in financial management and an increase in enrollment, which in recent years dropped from an average of 1500 to about half that, before climbing back up above 950 this year. On that day the branch of the LORD shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. Whoever is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem, once the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning. He was a moderate Puritan and a chaplain to Cromwell’s army during the English Civil War; afterward Charles II offered him the See of Hereford, but he was opposed to bishops and refused it, ending his career in the Church of England.
