The first week of impeachment hearings into the actions of the U.S. president concludes today with people around the world wondering whether the U.S. constitutional system of government will stand or fall. The answer so far: it remains standing and will continue to do so as long as the case remains in the House of Representatives. Rep. Adam Schiff (left, D-California), the chair of the Oversight Committee, is an experienced prosecutor who is maintaining House traditions of fairness, courtesy and respect much like those seen in the investigation of Richard Nixon and Watergate two generations ago. The opposing party has plenty of opportunity to mount a defense, but does not have a defense to offer; barring an exculpatory surprise, the House is likely to impeach Trump before Christmas. But no one can predict what the Senate will do in 2020. (Associated Press)
