The U.S. state of Oregon is getting ready for final passage of a bill which would make the state the first to impose mandatory, statewide rent control. The state population is growing fast, thanks to an influx of Californians seeking a lower cost of living (that is, rents) and a healthy economy. A trade group for small landlords says it can live with the proposed law, and state officials say Oregon needs 30,000 new homes built every year just to keep up with current demand.
