Veterans/Remembrance Day was Friday, which causes us to remember the remarkable life and ministry of the Rev. Birney Walker Smith, Jr. During World War II he was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, a segregated Air Force unit which distinguished itself in European combat. A year after the war ended in 1945, he was ordained a priest by the Bishop of Michigan at St. Matthew’s, Detroit, and served as Vicar of St. Mary the Virgin in Keokuk, Iowa, a town of 10,000 that’s 4% Black. Fr. Smith died in 1996.
