Frances Joseph Gaudet, of African-American and Native American descent, grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, attended Straight College, and dedicated her life to improving conditions for prisoners, eventually winning wide support from politicians and prison officials. In time she bought a farm and built a boarding school for children of working mothers, which she donated to the Diocese of Louisiana when she retired. In 1954 this became the Gaudet Episcopal Home, and her trust lives on today as Gaudet Scholarships for African-American children.
