Restoring sight now is possible with Optogenetics. a start-up company in Alameda, Calif., has designed a visual prosthesis called the Science Eye which could restore vision, albeit in a limited form, in people with retinitis pigmentosa. They are basing their work on a research tool in neuroscience called optogenetics, a form of gene therapy that delivers proteins called opsins via injection into the eye to boost the light sensitivity of cells in the retina, the layer of tissue at the rear of the eyeball. Therapeutic optogenetic therapy for vision restoration certainly has promise, according to Anand Swaroop, a senior investigator at the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, Md., who has worked on inherited retinal degeneration for close to four decades. But there’s still room for improvement. “At least at this stage, it seems to be very good in cases where someone is completely blind,” Swaroop said. “You should be able to find your way around. You’re not going to bump into things, which is great. But you’re not going to be distinguishing many different features.” They have a way to go but their research is promising. (WP)

Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Whenever the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out on each stage of their journey; but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel at each stage of their journey.

Fort Wayne, Indiana has its first Black female mayor; Sharon Tucker, a city councilmember and former county councilmember, was elected to replace five-term Mayor Tom Henry, who died of cancer a month ago. It’s a solemn day of remembrance in New Zealand and Australia to commemorate the nations’ war dead; Anzac is an acronym for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. It is held on the April 25 anniversary of the Anzacs’ arrival at Gallipoli, Turkey during World War I. The campaign, aimed as a quick strike to defeat the Ottoman Empire and open the Black Sea for British, French and Russian forces, became a stalemate, cost 8,709 Australian lives and 2,721 New Zealanders, resulting in the Allies’ withdrawal. Annual observances include public gatherings at dawn, a 2-minute moment of silence in honor of the soldiers’ heroism, and afternoon parades. The LORD said to Moses: You shall keep the festival of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt.

All that first opens the womb is mine, all your male livestock, the firstborn of cow and sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem.

No one shall appear before me empty-handed.

St. Mark’s Gospel is fast-paced and action-packed; Mark arranged Christ’s healing miracles to lead to the climactic passage in 8:27-30 when Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah.

If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 2 Corinthians 5:17

Barnabas and Paul, at the Stavrovouni Monastery on Cyprus. They hold up a church to indicate that they were builders; Barnabas carried the Gospel there and accompanied Paul on many of his travels to the Hellenized cities of Asia Minor.

Then after completing their mission Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem and brought with them John, whose other name was Mark.

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul. A Litany in the Aftermath of Gun Violence

Giver of Life and Love, you created all people as one family and called us to live together in peace. Surround us with your love as we face again the tragedy of gun violence.

For the children and adults who were killed last week, the brave ones who died protecting others, the many who were wounded and hospitalized, the traumatized, grieving survivors, and those known to you alone, Loving God,

Make us instruments of your peace.

God of Righteousness, you have granted our leaders, especially our President, our Governors, the members of Congress and of our courts and legislatures, power and responsibility to protect us, and to uphold our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Strengthen their devotion to our common life and give them clarity of purpose.

For all who bear such responsibility, for all who struggle to discern what is right in the face of powerful political forces, Loving God,

Make us instruments of your peace.

God of Compassion, we give you thanks for first responders: police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and all those whose duties bring them to the streets, the schools, the malls and the homes where the carnage of gun violence takes place every day. Give them courage and sound judgment in the heat of the moment and grant them compassion for the victims.

For our brothers and sisters who risk their lives and serenity as they rush to our aid, Loving God,

Make us instruments of your peace.

Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”

The U.S. chose a single artist this year to represent the nation at the Venice Biennale, the world’s largest exhibit of contemporary art. He is Jeffrey Gibson, a Mississippi Choctaw of Cherokee descent whose ancestors were forced to march on the Trail of Tears from their homes in the Southeast to Oklahoma, then known as Indian Country, starting in 1830. He’s the first Native American invited to participate since 1932. His exhibit is titled “the space in which to place me,” with bright, geometric paintings and sculptures with text from U.S. founding documents, showing the consistent pattern of lies in such phrases as “all men are created equal.” The artist also included a rainbow-clad figure, acknowledging the many identities he has taken on in his life. “I’ve looked at op art, pattern and decoration. I’ve looked at psychedelia, I have taken part in rave culture and queer culture and drag and the whole spectrum,” Gibson said. “And so for me, I would not be telling you the whole truth if I only chose to speak about Indigeneity. But my body is an Indigenous body — it’s all funneled through this body. And so my hope is that by telling my experience, that everyone else can project their own kind of intersected, layered experience into the world.” The theme of this year’s Biennale is “Stranieri Ovunque – Strangers Everywhere.” It features exhibits from 90 countries and runs through November 24. To an American, this image needs no explanation. It’s the inside of a British slave ship, with kidnapped Africans chained up and packed like sardines in the hold. The enslavement of West Africans does not fit the classic definition of genocide in its intent – slave traders wanted their captives to survive the voyage – but in its effect: death by the millions for two and a half centuries starting in 1619. Almighty God, our Refuge and our Rock, your loving care knows no bounds and embraces all the peoples of the earth: Defend and protect those who fall victim to the forces of evil, and as we remember this day those who endured depredation and death because of who they were, not because of what they had done or failed to do, give us the courage to stand against hatred and oppression, and to seek the dignity and well-being of all for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, in whom you have reconciled the world to yourself; and who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
