Buffalo jumps, scattered throughout the western USA and Canada, are cliff formations where Native American hunters gathered, prayed, and then descended on their horses en masse into the valley below for community hunts of the sacred animals. This one is within Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. Buffalo jumps remain holy places today. (National Park Service)

THE LESSONS
Isaiah 25:1-9 (NRSV)

O LORD, you are my God;
I will exalt you, I will praise your name;
for you have done wonderful things,
plans formed of old, faithful and sure.
For you have made the city a heap,
the fortified city a ruin;
the palace of aliens is a city no more,
it will never be rebuilt.
Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;
cities of ruthless nations will fear you.
For you have been a refuge to the poor,
a refuge to the needy in their distress,

I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father.” His disciples said, “Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure of speech! Now we know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.

This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

An Episcopal church in Fargo, North Dakota thinks so highly of Christian inclusiveness that they’ve commissioned a stained glass window for Gay, Lesbian, Bi & Trans people. The people of St. Stephen’s, Fargo, call this the Integrity window, after the LGBT caucus in the Episcopal Church; besides rainbow stripes and a commemoration of St. Aelred of Rievaulx, the patron saint of friendship, it includes these essential words from the Baptismal Covenant of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer: “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?” To which the candidate for baptism replies, “I will.” (Valley News Live)

London-born Anne Ayres moved to New York in 1836, was stirred to action by the sermons of Fr. William Augustus Muhlenberg was the great-grandson of the “father of Lutheranism” in the American colonies, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, and the grandson of Frederick Muhlenberg, a pastor and member of the Continental Congress, later Speaker of the House of Representatives. William Augustus first made his mark as a teacher in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and led the town to establish one of the first public schools there; when he became a priest he continued to develop new educational theory and practice and is considered a forerunner of John Dewey, the great educational philosopher. Muhlenberg taught that a child who was not a great student in the beginning could become one later, with the proper guidance. When he turned to religious education, he made sure that rigorous standards still applied, even as he sought to make the school a religious community. (anglicanhistory.org)

Francine Hughes Wilson has died, a Michigan woman who endured years of abuse from her husband until, one day in 1977, she set fire to his bedroom while he slept, grabbed her children and ran to the police. She was charged with first-degree murder but was found not guilty by reason of (temporary) insanity; she claimed a voice had urged her to do it. Faith McNulty wrote a book about the case called The Burning Bed, which was turned into an acclaimed TV movie starring Farrah Fawcett, watched by a reported 75 million Americans. All are credited with spurring police and prosecutors to take domestic violence more seriously, and women around the country to organize shelters for women and children escaping the abuse. Romans 9:1-18 (NRSV)

I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit—I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all Israelites truly belong to Israel, and not all of Abraham’s children are his true descendants; but “It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named for you.” This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants. For this is what the promise said, “About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son.” Nor is that all; something similar happened to Rebecca when she had conceived children by one husband, our ancestor Isaac. Even before they had been born or had done anything good or bad (so that God’s purpose of election might continue, not by works but by his call) she was told, “The elder shall serve the younger.” As it is written,

“I have loved Jacob,
but I have hated Esau.”

What then are we to say? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

So it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God who shows mercy. For the scripture says to Pharaoh, “I have raised you up for the very purpose of showing my power in you, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.” So then he has mercy on whomever he chooses, and he hardens the heart of whomever he chooses.

Frederick Maurice, a latecomer to Anglicanism, was not impressed by its Sunday isolation from the rest of life, particularly the injustices visited upon the poor. He wrote, “We have been dosing our people with religion when what they want is not this but the living God.” He went on to be a founder of the Christian Socialist Movement while having to refute numerous attacks on his orthodoxy as well as his politics; being Professor of Moral Theology at Cambridge wasn’t enough for some people.

As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Romans 3:19-31 (NRSV)

Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus.

Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

John 7:1-13 (NRSV)

After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews were looking for an opportunity to kill him. Now the Jewish festival of Booths was near. So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing; for no one who wants to be widely known acts in secret. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” (For not even his brothers believed in him.) Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil. Go to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival, for my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

But after his brothers had gone to the festival, then he also went, not publicly but as it were in secret. The Jews were looking for him at the festival and saying, “Where is he?” And there was considerable complaining about him among the crowds. While some were saying, “He is a good man,” others were saying, “No, he is deceiving the crowd.” Yet no one would speak openly about him for fear of the Jews.

St. Cyril was a catechist of the early Church, whose teachings were largely codified into the Nicene Creed. Students entered into a period of intense instruction with him prior to baptism at the Great Vigil of Easter; out of that Cyril developed the liturgical observances we now know as Holy Week. Great crowds of pilgrims descended on Jerusalem to hear him and participate. The observance of this Week of Christ’s Passion spread throughout the world; the 1979 U.S. Book of Common Prayer’s rites are based on the model developed by Cyril and his successor John.
