Evening Prayer 1.19.17, Wulfstan, Bishop of Worcester, 1095

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.”

Thomas Oommen, the Bishop of Madhya Kerala, was elected Moderator of the Church of South India at its 35th Synod in Kottayam, just a few months after celebrating his diocese’s 200th anniversary. “The boundaries of the denominations of the Christian Church must become thinner in order to proclaim Jesus in practice,” he said. He pledged to continue to “take up the cause of ecological concerns, of the rights of dalits and adivasis and the need for gender equality. We will continue to oppose injustice, particularly where it concerns the rights of Dalit Christians.” The church was formed in 1947, the year of Indian independence, as a merger of several Protestant denominations while retaining episcopal order and polity. He will serve half-time in his own diocese and half at CSI headquarters in Chennai. (Church of South India)

The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”

He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.

Abbot Wolfstan became Bishop of Worcester four years prior to William the Conqueror’s invasion of England, and overcame the new king’s disdain when he professed obedience on canonical grounds to the new Archbishop of Canterbury Lanfranc. So Wulfstan kept his see, lived another 30 years and presided over the transition from an Anglo-Saxon church to an Anglo-French one.

William Tyndale window at Hertford College, Oxford. He had a singular passion to translate the Bible into English, but Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey opposed him, so he fled to Germany. He was betrayed by a friend, strangled and burned at the stake on this day in 1536. But his translation is immortal; almost 80% of what he was able to complete was carried into the Authorized King James Version. (Richard Gibbs)

The prophet Micah wrote his prophecy in the last 25 years of the 8th century B.C., making him a younger contemporary of Isaiah I. Micah forecast the destruction of Jerusalem, which he described as pretentious and corrupt. (iconographer unknown)

Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney, a certain Tertullus, and they reported their case against Paul to the governor. When Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: “Your Excellency, because of you we have long enjoyed peace, and reforms have been made for this people because of your foresight. We welcome this in every way and everywhere with utmost gratitude. But, to detain you no further, I beg you to hear us briefly with your customary graciousness. We have, in fact, found this man a pestilent fellow, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. He even tried to profane the temple, and so we seized him. By examining him yourself you will be able to learn from him concerning everything of which we accuse him.” The Jews also joined in the charge by asserting that all this was true.

When the governor motioned to him to speak, Paul replied: “I cheerfully make my defense, knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation. As you can find out, it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem. They did not find me disputing with anyone in the temple or stirring up a crowd either in the synagogues or throughout the city. Neither can they prove to you the charge that they now bring against me. But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors, believing everything laid down according to the law or written in the prophets. I have a hope in God—a hope that they themselves also accept—that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. Therefore I do my best always to have a clear conscience toward God and all people. Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation and to offer sacrifices. While I was doing this, they found me in the temple, completing the rite of purification, without any crowd or disturbance. But there were some Jews from Asia—they ought to be here before you to make an accusation, if they have anything against me. Or let these men here tell what crime they had found when I stood before the council, unless it was this one sentence that I called out while standing before them, ‘It is about the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’”

But Felix, who was rather well informed about the Way, adjourned the hearing with the comment, “When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case.” Then he ordered the centurion to keep him in custody, but to let him have some liberty and not to prevent any of his friends from taking care of his needs.

Jesus said, “But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”

The United Church of Canada, a 1920s-era merger of Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists and local churches in the West, is now faced with an ordained minister who has publicly declared that she’s an atheist and wants to keep her pulpit. Her name is the Rev. Gretta Vosper, pastor of the West Hill United Church in suburban Toronto. She preaches peace, joy, love and inclusion, but not Jesus Christ; no Bible or sacraments either. This isn’t the first such incident in the United Church; in 1997, the newly elected National Moderator said, “I don’t believe Jesus was God,” denied the Resurrection – and kept his job for the rest of his three-year term. So Ms. Vosper is fighting to stay in, but says that if she is deposed, she doesn’t want to be part of the United Church anyway. The battle will begin at the local presbytery, which owns the building. Fr. Huntington’s greatest international impact is his authorship of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, which sets out four broad bases on which the Anglican Communion discusses reunion with other Christian churches, and states a deep desire and commitment for the reunification of Christ’s Church. To reduce the Quadrilateral to its bullet points: the Scriptures, the Creeds, the Biblical sacraments, and the “historic episcopate, locally adapted.”

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

A Collect for the Presence of Christ

Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.

For the Mission of the Church

Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to reconcile the world to yourself: We praise and bless you for those whom you have sent in the power of the Spirit to preach the Gospel to all nations. We thank you that in all parts of the earth a community of love has been gathered together by their prayers and labors, and that in every place your servants call upon your Name; for the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours for ever. The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,

Evening Prayer 1.5.15, Eve of the Epiphany, or Twelfth Night

And I will also take some of them as priests and as Levites, says the LORD.

Three Kings window at the Third Avenue United Church in Saskatoon. The visit of the astrologers/kings/wise men/magi is charming, but the meaning of this major feast’s formal name is its real significance: Epiphany means showing, and this is the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. God extended salvation to all the peoples of the world willing to believe. Christ came first for the Jews, the people of the Covenant, but he didn’t stop there; he came to save the whole world. If you’re not Jewish, this is where your salvation begins.

Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Isaiah 60:1
