Our favorite photograph of our favorite bishop, Catherine M. Waynick of Indianapolis. She’s softspoken, sober but full of joy, without guile, gentle and persuasive, a strong leader who united her diocese and guided it through Anglicanism’s worldwide schism of 2003 with barely a scratch. Her diocese is a happy place, and has been throughout her tenure. Her successor, Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, will make history tomorrow as the first American woman bishop to succeed a woman bishop, because Cate gave voters the confidence to do it; that it wasn’t necessary to elect a man to “balance things out” or appease a disgruntled faction, so delegates could go ahead and elect whoever was best for the job. THE LESSON
Luke 3:15-22 (NRSV)

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done, added to them all by shutting up John in prison.

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will change his mind about the disaster that he has pronounced against you.

For the first time in 53 years, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, one step below the Supreme Court, has declared that discrimination against Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Trans people is illegal under the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a form of discrimination on the basis of sex, though “sexual orientation” is not spelled out there. If upheld by the Supreme Court, this would accomplish the original most important goal of the LGBT civil rights movement. (Other circuit courts of equal standing have followed the wording of the act and disallowed claims based on sexual orientation.) The High Court will eventually have to resolve the legal conflict; meanwhile the case before the 7th Circuit, which originated in Indiana, will not be appealed, so the ruling stands as law in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. THE LESSONS
Jeremiah 26:1-16 (NRSV)

At the beginning of the reign of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah, this word came from the LORD: Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the LORD; speak to them all the words that I command you; do not hold back a word. It may be that they will listen, all of them, and will turn from their evil way, that I may change my mind about the disaster that I intend to bring on them because of their evil doings. You shall say to them: Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, and to heed the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently—though you have not heeded—then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.

The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD. Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “It is the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will change his mind about the disaster that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, here I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will be bringing innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

Romans 11:1-12 (NRSV)

I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what is the divine reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, as it is written,

“God gave them a sluggish spirit,
eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,
down to this very day.”

And David says,
“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and keep their backs forever bent.”

So I ask, have they stumbled so as to fall? By no means! But through their stumbling salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. Now if their stumbling means riches for the world, and if their defeat means riches for Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone me?” The Jews answered, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you, but for blasphemy, because you, though only a human being, are making yourself God.” Jesus answered, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If those to whom the word of God came were called ‘gods’—and the scripture cannot be annulled—can you say that the one whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Then they tried to arrest him again, but he escaped from their hands.

He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. Many came to him, and they were saying, “John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” And many believed in him there.

Deaconess Emma Drant in Hawai’i got to young Gee Ching Wu when she asked him to teach her Chinese in exchange for English lessons. Though hesitant at first, he became a Christian, took the name of Daniel and eventually followed her to California, where she established missions among Chinese immigrants in San Francisco and Oakland. He managed those two sites while also studying at the seminary in nearby Berkeley, was ordained in 1912 and became Vicar of both congregations. He used to prowl the docks looking for Chinese just off the boat, whom he helped integrate into the community. So they could maintain their cultural heritage while adapting to their new land, he taught Chinese to the children and English to the parents; his ministry of 36 years established the Episcopal Church’s ministry to Chinese Americans. By the power of your Holy Spirit, raise up other inspired leaders, that today’s newcomers may find leaders from their diverse communities faithful to our Savior Jesus Christ; who with you and the same Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. The childhood home of civil rights lawyer, priest and feminist icon Dr. Pauli Murray in Durham, North Carolina has just been named a National Historic Landmark, and the Diocese of North Carolina released this photo on Twitter. Built by her grandfather, a Civil War veteran, in 1898, the home is scheduled to open to the public in 2020.

Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?'” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?'” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

BIEREN, Austin, 25, SSGT, US Air Force, Umatilla, OR, 21st Space Wing

Staff Sgt. Austin Bieren died a week ago while serving with security forces in northern Syria, the second American serviceman known to have died in Syria. The Department of Defense said he appeared to have died from natural causes in a non-combat situation. His mother Tracy Finck said joining the military had been her son’s plan from a young age. “He was amazing, kind, smart, always wanted to join the service,” she said. He leaves behind an “amazing” wife of six years, Rachel, sister Brianne Bieren and a nephew Jaren, “who he adored,” as well as parents Tracy and Jody Finck and John and Amber Bieren. There are currently about 900 U.S. troops there providing support to Operation Inherent Resolve. Bieren was assigned to the 21st Space Wing at Colorado’s Peterson Air Force Base. Peterson’s Facebook page said Bieren “was a valuable and beloved member of our team and will be sorely missed. His dedication to his country was evident in his actions – he was a superb Airman.”

though his works were finished at the foundation of the world. For in one place it speaks about the seventh day as follows, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this place it says, “They shall not enter my rest.” Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he sets a certain day— “today”—saying through David much later, in the words already quoted,

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later about another day. So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God’s rest also cease from their labors as God did from his.

Gregory’s older brother Basil (the Great) forced him into becoming a bishop because Basil needed the help; he was waging a fierce battle for the trinitarian Nicene faith against the heretical Emperor Valens, who sought to undercut him by dividing his metropolitan See of Cappodocia. Thus Basil took on Gregory as his suffragan bishop of Nyssa, ten miles away. Gregory was awful at being a bishop, but he picked up the fight – and when Basil died suddenly at a young age, followed by their older sister Macrina, who taught them everything they knew, he was ready to defend the Trinitarian belief. Valens and the other Arians thought Jesus was a lesser person than God the Father, and if they had prevailed, it’s doubtful the Church would have survived. Christ would have been relegated to “prophet” or “great teacher” status, not the reconciling Son and Savior we worship today. (Iconographer unknown)

A group of women in Yakima, Washington get together every Tuesday to knit and crochet for a good cause: they make knockers out of yarn for women who have undergone mastectomies. They say the name makes people smile every time it comes up, which makes it easier to talk about a woman’s practical needs and to offer support. Wendy Walker, at top, is one of our webcasters and told us they were being interviewed this week for a feature story on the local news. (KNDO-TV)

Archbishop Luwum with the infamous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who had him gunned down for protesting government-sanctioned rape and murder. Uganda is the most Christian country in Africa, and Anglican archbishops are influential public figures valued by the government as long as they don’t cause trouble. Luwum told the truth about Amin, so the dictator eliminated him. The self-proclaimed King of Scotland was responsible for as many as 500,000 deaths.

THE LESSON

On the following day, when they came from Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see whether perhaps he would find anything on it. Stories of the brothers’ missionary success always center around their joint development of written Slavonic language – Cyril came up with the “glagolithic” characters still used in Slavonic liturgy, while Methodius translated the Scriptures – but fail to account for the emotional pull these brothers excite among the peoples of Eastern Europe, who felt their culture was honored and respected in ways it had not been before. It’s as if Cyril and Methodius, who were not Slavic but Greek, taught the Slavs who they are, so that today these saints are as esteemed in their culture as Shakespeare, Cranmer and King James’s Men are in ours. Almighty and everlasting God, by the power of the Holy Spirit you moved your servant Cyril and his brother Methodius to bring the light of the Gospel to a hostile and divided people: Overcome all bitterness and strife among us by the love of Christ, and make us one united family under the banner of the Prince of Peace; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you manifest in your servants the signs of your presence: Send forth upon us the Spirit of love, that in companionship with one another your abounding grace may increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
