Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

People in Mississippi, North Carolina and around the Episcopal Church are mourning the Rt. Rev. Chip Marble, VIII Bishop of Mississippi and later an assistant bishop under Michael Curry in the Diocese of North Carolina. Bishop Marble is credited with reviving the vocational diaconate in Mississippi.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night,” darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. Psalm 139:10-11

GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.

When Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. Richard Upjohn designed the Church of the Holy Communion with and for William A. Muhlenberg, as well as a Sisters’ House next door for Anne Ayres, CHC. The parish thrived for a century, but by 1975 the Flatiron district was no longer residential and the church merged with two others nearby. Give us that vision and compassion with which you so richly endowed William Augustus Muhlenberg and Anne Ayers, that we may labor tirelessly to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Christchurch, New Zealand unveiled the National Earthquake Memorial Wednesday along the Avon River in remembrance of 185 people killed six years ago today. The wall of names, designed by Grega Vezjak of Slovenia and arranged according to survivors’ wishes, is called Oi Manawa, which means “tremor of the heart” in Maori. Eric Liddell monument at the former Weihsien internment camp, Weifang, Shandong, China. The year after his Olympic gold medal, Liddell returned to North China, near his birthplace, was ordained in 1932, married the daughter of Canadian missionaries, had three daughters and endured many hardships due to ongoing conflict between Japan and China. After Pearl Harbor, the British government advised its citizens to evacuate China, and Mrs. Liddell took the girls to Canada, while her husband and his brother Rob stayed on and continued their work. Eric was imprisoned at the concentration camp, where he was remembered by survivors for his ministry to other prisoners. He died shortly before the camp was liberated.

Eric Liddell at the Paris Olympics, 1924. He won gold and set a world’s record in the 400 meters, then grabbed a bronze in the 200, but his best event was the 100 meter dash. When his preliminary heat was scheduled for a Sunday, he refused to run because he considered it the Sabbath, a principled stand immortalized in the film “Chariots of Fire.” But his return to China and service to fellow prisoners of war are why we celebrate him as a saint; he was interned by the Japanese in 1943 and later given a chance to participate in a prisoner exchange with the British, but he gave up his place to a pregnant woman instead.

U.S. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry conducted the first of six planned “revivals” in the next two years with his first stop last weekend in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The 3-day series of events reported good crowds, multiracial and ecumenical leadership, youth events, four of the PB’s patented stemwinder sermons, music by the Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church choir and lots of Amens. “Episcopal Church, we need you to follow Jesus. We need you to be the countercultural people of God who would love one another, who would care when others could care less, who would give, not take,” he told a gathering at Calvary Church. He plans other revivals in the Dioceses of West Missouri, Georgia, San Joaquin, Honduras and a joint evangelism mission with the Church of England in 2018. (Photos and reportage by the Rev. Bishop Curry had breakfast with diocesan youth leaders at Church of the Holy Cross in the struggling Homewood West neighborhood. Technological change adds to the world’s complexity, he told the young leaders, but “progress as a way of love, progress in living, progress in learning how to live together in all of our differences and varieties may be the ultimate progress that will make the difference for us all.”

You are aware that all who are in Asia have turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. An old idea being discussed anew is the creation of a continental trade pact to eliminate tariffs and align transportation systems; the nations currently trade less with each other than with Europe, Asia and the Americas. St. Brigid of Kildare, Ireland established a “double” monastery of men and women; in time a city grew up around it. She participated in Church governance as an abbess equal to a bishop, or as a bishop herself; the offices were largely the same. Despite the election of Donald Trump, low-wage workers and labor unions are continuing to push for a much higher minimum wage, dubbed the Fight for $15. McDonald’s employees took to the streets in New York City, while in Detroit and Chicago, workers walked off the job in the busiest airports. The four-year-old movement has won bigger paychecks in California, New York and scores of cities. Andrew, Peter’s brother, was the first apostle called by Jesus. The historian Eusebius reports that Andrew went to Scythia in Asia Minor to conduct his mission, and this icon honors him as the First Ecumenical Patriarch of Contantinople.
