I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey has suspended Fr. Warren Hall because he supports LGBT advocacy groups within the Church, and a Lesbian guidance counselor at a parochial high school who was fired for marrying a woman in a civil ceremony. Fr. Hall was previously the chaplain at Seton Hall University, but Archbishop John Myers sacked him because he posted support for a “No H8” campaign on Facebook. He was allowed to return to parish ministry until this latest episode, which the the bishop claimed “confuses the faithful.” Fr. Hall can no longer present himself as a priest or celebrate Mass in public, but he’ll be speaking at a PFLAG meeting for LGBTs’ parents and friends next week. (Frances Micklow/The Star-Ledger)

THE LESSON
John 10:1-18 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. Ms. Crandall advertised for students “of color” in The Liberator, a leading abolitionist newspaper, in 1833. Racial integration was part of her classical curriculum for girls, but violence forced her to close the school; the townspeople kept setting fire to it with children inside.

As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people urged them to speak about these things again the next sabbath. When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.

I saw no temple in the city, *
for its temple is the God of surpassing strength and the Lamb.
And the city has no need of sun or moon to light it, *

Prudence Crandall was a Quaker who opened a school for girls in Canterbury, Connecticut in 1831. Two years later she admitted a Black girl, which so outraged her neighbors that she had to close it for fear of her students’ safety. Sixty years later, after the U.S. Civil War, the state apologized, called her an official Heroine and gave her a pension; no word on whether they also apologized to the former student. Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.

George Frederic Watts: Anthony Ashley Cooper, known as Lord Shaftesbury. He was the son of an earl who took a seat in Parliament representing a pocket borough his family controlled – but from there he did remarkable things. He was a critic of the slave trade and devoted himself to labor issues, improving health and safety conditions, limiting work hours for factory workers and miners, particularly women and children. He worked for years to improve England’s insane asylums, where conditions were appalling.

Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

John Rising, 1790: William Wilberforce, Age 29. An evangelical Anglican, Wilberforce is known worldwide for his dogged persistence in Parliament to ban slavery; wealthy, powerful forces were arrayed against him. A lot of aristocrats made a lot of money buying and selling human beings; even political moderates with some sympathy toward abolition thought twice about prohibiting it, but for 20 years Wilberforce didn’t take no for an answer, and the trade was banned in 1807. But still the nobility hung onto their New World plantations worked by unpaid labour, so Wilberforce campaigned another 26 years to abolish slavery itself; Parliament finally gave in in 1833, when he was on his deathbed.

Evening Prayer 7.20.16, Four Liberating Women: Truth, Bloomer, Tubman & Stanton

Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward.

Sojourner Truth fled slavery with the help of Quaker friends, and in middle age became a traveling preacher of uncommon power. She was illiterate but had much of the Bible committed to memory. At a women’s rights convention in Ohio, she was treated differently than white women by the proto-feminists, and pointedly asked, “Ain’t I a woman?” (Linda Ruiz-Lozito)

Yours is the day, O God, yours also the night; you established the moon and the sun. You fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. Psalm 74:15-16

Amelia Bloomer, an Episcopalian writer and editor best known for women’s dress reform, was active in the temperance, abolitionist and women’s rights movements all her life because she was a disciple of Jesus Christ; she understood the baptismal covenant a century before it was written. Male clergy attacked her from the pulpit, based on an Old Testament verse, for wearing Turkish trousers. She fired back, “It matters not what Moses had to say to the men and women of his time about what they should wear. If clergy really cared about what Moses said about clothes, they would all put fringes and blue ribbons on their garments.” Her critics didn’t have an answer, so they called her more names.

The last in our series on U.S. currency reform, adding women and African-Americans whose images are to be placed on dollar-denominated bills, is Lucretia Mott, a Quaker abolitionist and feminist who helped write the Declaration of Sentiments approved by the Seneca Falls (N.Y.) Convention on women’s rights in 1848. Interestingly, Christina Rossetti was ambivalent about women voting, but agreed with Mott on the abolition of slavery. Christina Rossetti, by her brother Dante. Holy Women, Holy Men offers a concise yet sweeping overview of her life and times: 19th century Britain, a period of rapid industrialization, the creation of a new middle class, the abandonment of the countryside, the squalor of urban slums – and cultural, religious and artistic reactions, including nostalgia for the way things were. Dante Rossetti started an artistic movement called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; Christina wrote 500 devotional poems on the sacramental things of the earth. Two of her poems have been set to music as Christmas carols: “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Love Came Down at Christmas.”
