Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.”

Joni Sledge has died, one of the leaders of Sister Sledge, known for the disco era classic “We Are Family,” a joyful celebration played at family reunions, Pittsburgh baseball games, diocesan synods, on cruise ships, in smalltown Gay bars and senior shuffleboard tournaments whenever a crowdpleasing song is needed. They were four teenage sisters in Philadelphia when they got started; they built up an audience, opened for other touring acts and eventually became headliners themselves with several hits to their credit, none bigger than their joyful ode to sisterhood. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

John 5:1-18 (NRSV)

After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” But he answered them, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.'” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath.

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.” For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.

When Jesus was in Jerusalem during the Passover festival, many believed in his name because they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone.

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Britons lined the streets in 1929 for Studdert Kennedy’s funeral. He served heroically as a field chaplain in World War I and wrote poetry in a simple soldier’s voice, struggling to understand God in the midst of mass suffering. His writing, especially the raw immediacy and profaneness of his poetry, drew a huge response from the battlefield and the home front alike.

Christchurch, New Zealand unveiled the National Earthquake Memorial Wednesday along the Avon River in remembrance of 185 people killed six years ago today. The wall of names, designed by Grega Vezjak of Slovenia and arranged according to survivors’ wishes, is called Oi Manawa, which means “tremor of the heart” in Maori. Eric Liddell monument at the former Weihsien internment camp, Weifang, Shandong, China. The year after his Olympic gold medal, Liddell returned to North China, near his birthplace, was ordained in 1932, married the daughter of Canadian missionaries, had three daughters and endured many hardships due to ongoing conflict between Japan and China. After Pearl Harbor, the British government advised its citizens to evacuate China, and Mrs. Liddell took the girls to Canada, while her husband and his brother Rob stayed on and continued their work. Eric was imprisoned at the concentration camp, where he was remembered by survivors for his ministry to other prisoners. He died shortly before the camp was liberated.

Now Naomi had a kinsman on her husband’s side, a prominent rich man, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain, behind someone in whose sight I may find favor.” She said to her, “Go, my daughter.” So she went. She came and gleaned in the field behind the reapers. As it happened, she came to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech. Just then Boaz came from Bethlehem. He said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you.” They answered, “The LORD bless you.” Then Boaz said to his servant who was in charge of the reapers, “To whom does this young woman belong?” The servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, “She is the Moabite who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. Eric Liddell at the Paris Olympics, 1924. He won gold and set a world’s record in the 400 meters, then grabbed a bronze in the 200, but his best event was the 100 meter dash. When his preliminary heat was scheduled for a Sunday, he refused to run because he considered it the Sabbath, a principled stand immortalized in the film “Chariots of Fire.” But his return to China and service to fellow prisoners of war are why we celebrate him as a saint; he was interned by the Japanese in 1943 and later given a chance to participate in a prisoner exchange with the British, but he gave up his place to a pregnant woman instead.
