I, I am he who comforts you;
why then are you afraid of a mere mortal who must die,
a human being who fades like grass?

On Friday the United States closed its borders to refugees and announced it will apply a religious test to entry applications from 7 Muslim nations. Up to 200 people in transit at the time the order was issued were detained at U.S. airports, including an Iraqi-born interpreter for the U.S. government for the past dozen years, above, who was freed after several hours. Saturday night a Federal judge issued a stay of part of the order, preventing people caught up in the ban from being deported. Chaotic scenes were also reported in other airports around the world. Hebrews 11:8-16 (NRSV)

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.” All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

John 7:14-31 (NRSV)

About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. The Jews were astonished at it, saying, “How does this man have such learning, when he has never been taught?” Then Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine but his who sent me. Anyone who resolves to do the will of God will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. Those who speak on their own seek their own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing false in him.

“Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you looking for an opportunity to kill me?” The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I performed one work, and all of you are astonished. Moses gave you circumcision (it is, of course, not from Moses, but from the patriarchs), and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath in order that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I healed a man’s whole body on the sabbath? Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Now some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is not this the man whom they are trying to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, but they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah? Yet we know where this man is from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” Then Jesus cried out as he was teaching in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” Then they tried to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come. Yet many in the crowd believed in him and were saying, “When the Messiah comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

We’re pleased to announce that our Annual Meeting last Wednesday approved a budget increase to $40,000, including 10% dedicated to missions, adding a new grant recipient, the Haiti Nursing Foundation, which supports scholarships at the Faculty of Nursing Science of the Episcopal University of Haiti. This builds on a similar relationship we have with the school of nursing at Cuttington University in Liberia, where we have established a scholarship named for our beloved Martha Kelley. We believe the best way to improve public health in nations where poverty is widespread is supporting the professional education of nurses. These are some proud graduates! (Haiti Nursing Foundation)

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;

Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days; but I did not see any other apostle except James the Lord’s brother. In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie! Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, and I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ; they only heard it said, “The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they glorified God because of me.

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up in response to a revelation. Then I laid before them (though only in a private meeting with the acknowledged leaders) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure that I was not running, or had not run, in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. But because of false believers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us—we did not submit to them even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might always remain with you. And from those who were supposed to be acknowledged leaders (what they actually were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those leaders contributed nothing to me. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel for the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter making him an apostle to the circumcised also worked through me in sending me to the Gentiles), and when James and Cephas and John, who were acknowledged pillars, recognized the grace that had been given to me, they gave to Barnabas and me the right hand of fellowship, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. They asked only one thing, that we remember the poor, which was actually what I was eager to do.

For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. The “much beloved daughter” Li Tim-Oi took the Christian name Florence at baptism, after Florence Nightingale. She was ordained a deacon in 1941 and a priest in 1944, after Hong Kong fell to the Japanese and male priests could not travel to her parish to celebrate the Eucharist. She chose to cease her priestly functions when her ordination became controversial after World War II. She moved to Hepu, China to continue her ministry, was forced into a “re-education” camp during the Cultural Revolution, and finally was allowed to visit family in Canada – where she was licensed as a priest in the Diocese of Montréal and later Ontario. The Defense Department has announced the name of the solider who allegedly committed suicide while supporting operations at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Spc. John P. Rodriguez, of Hemet, California, died Jan. 12 at approximately 8:30 a.m., reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rodriguez was assigned to 2nd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, from Fort Bliss, Texas. The 3rd Armored Brigade deployed to Kuwait last summer with 3,500 soldiers. The unit primarily has been based out of Camp Buehring, undergoing training with regional and coalition partners, including Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The unit has participated in roughly six named exercises and 20 smaller engagements with host nation forces, and is expected to return this spring.

Lord Snowdon has died, the celebrity photographer, documentarian and former husband of Britain’s Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister. Born Antony Armstrong-Jones, the first commoner to marry a king’s daughter in 400 years, his photos of luminaries like Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, Laurence Olivier, Sophia Loren and assorted royals were widely admired and commercially successful, but he also shot a variety of Londoners, including children, elders, artists and the mentally ill. Dr. Huston Smith has died, a leading expert in comparing the world’s religions. He made it his business to experience them all, from Tibetan monks to Hindu yogis and Sufi dervishes; he famously dropped acid with Timothy Leary in 1962. He loved the ecstatic experiences he had with hallucinogens, but having tried them he never wanted to go back. So he kept on looking for all the ways people reach for the Divine, and considered himself a worshiper though he did not wholly identify with any religion. The son of Methodist missionaries in Suzhou, China, he was ordained as well, and once was president of a Hindu philosophical society in St. Louis while pastoring a church there. William Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois. He pastored a Lutheran church in Pittsburgh, so how did he establish so many institutions in other parts of the U.S.? He got help from deaconesses, who were often trained in hospital settings. More than a century later there are still Passavant clinics, senior centers and social service agencies, and many hospitals named Deaconess; Methodist sisters were already nurses when they began ministry training.

As if Rendel, Haiti didn’t have enough to deal with, deadly cholera has combined with Hurricane Matthew to wipe out 90% of the town of 25,000. Most survivors have fled, but those escaping have to cross this contaiminated river multiple times; the only community leaders left are the Roman Catholic priest and a few nurses who run a clinic that’s fast running out of supplies. Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. Gian Lorenzo Bernini: The Ecstasy of St. Teresa. She is famous as a mystic who received fantastic visions, but there’s more to her than that; she was a missionary and administrator who founded 17 convents of Reformed or “discalced” (barefoot) Carmelites, whose ascetic piety provided the framework she felt was necessary to enable the sisters to develop true faith. (And yes, it may be true that she flew.) Let’s think about is the ecstasy this artwork tries to depict; what is our own experience of being transported by the love of God? Was it in music, writing, art, sacraments, mission? What makes you fly? Teresa wasn’t the only one; you’ve done it too.
