Buffalo jumps, scattered throughout the western USA and Canada, are cliff formations where Native American hunters gathered, prayed, and then descended on their horses en masse into the valley below for community hunts of the sacred animals. THE LESSONS
Isaiah 25:1-9 (NRSV)

O LORD, you are my God;
I will exalt you, I will praise your name;
for you have done wonderful things,
plans formed of old, faithful and sure.
For you have made the city a heap,
the fortified city a ruin;
the palace of aliens is a city no more,
it will never be rebuilt.

cities of ruthless nations will fear you.

Jesus’ scourging of the temple.

THE LESSON
John 2:13-22 (NRSV)

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Christchurch, New Zealand unveiled the National Earthquake Memorial Wednesday along the Avon River in remembrance of 185 people killed six years ago today. The wall of names, designed by Grega Vezjak of Slovenia and arranged according to survivors’ wishes, is called Oi Manawa, which means “tremor of the heart” in Maori. Eric Liddell monument at the former Weihsien internment camp, Weifang, Shandong, China. The year after his Olympic gold medal, Liddell returned to North China, near his birthplace, was ordained in 1932, married the daughter of Canadian missionaries, had three daughters and endured many hardships due to ongoing conflict between Japan and China. After Pearl Harbor, the British government advised its citizens to evacuate China, and Mrs. Liddell took the girls to Canada, while her husband and his brother Rob stayed on and continued their work. Eric was imprisoned at the concentration camp, where he was remembered by survivors for his ministry to other prisoners. He died shortly before the camp was liberated.

Volunteers at Golden Bay wrapped the whales in wet towels and kept them hydrated, which allows them to survive a few days until they can be coaxed back into the water. Biologists say the pilot whales are so devoted to their “pod” that when one or two wander off and get in trouble near the shore or trapped in a bay, the others come rushing to stay together – and they all get stranded by the ebbing tide. Several dozen pilot whales did make it back to safety with human help, then had to be discouraged from returning to the beach to be with the rest of their community. So the humans formed a chain of their own bodies to keep them out, and this time at least, it worked. (Project JonahNZ)

One of three Primates of New Zealand, Archbishop William Brown Turei has died in office following a ministry of 67 years; he was 92, an important figure in Maori society and the nation. He was elected Bishop of Tairawhiti in 1992 following Church constitutional reforms which created the shared primacy two years earlier, and became archbishop in 2006. Co-Primate Philip Richardson said, “Archbishop Brown was a gentle and wise leader, who brought grace, compassion and insight to all that he did and said.” We ask your prayers for a people in mourning. THE LESSON
Mark 2:1-12 (NRSV)

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—“I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.” And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Aelred joined the Cistercians at Rievaulx in Yorkshire at age 24 and soon was carrying letters from the Archbishop to Rome. On his way home he stopped at the mother house in Clairvaux, where he impressed the founder, St. Bernard, who encouraged him to write his first book, Mirror of Charity. In time he established a new Cistercian house at Revesby, and four years later was elected abbot of Rievaulx, where he wrote his best-known work, Spiritual Friendship, which takes as its model the relationship between Christ and the disciple he loved.
