Isaiah 9:8-17 (NRSV)

The Lord sent a word against Jacob,
and it fell on Israel;
and all the people knew it —
Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria —
but in pride and arrogance of heart they said:
“The bricks have fallen,
but we will build with dressed stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
but we will put cedars in their place.”
So the LORD raised adversaries against them,
and stirred up their enemies,
the Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west,

For all this his anger has not turned away;

The people did not turn to him who struck them,

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Even so, many will follow their licentious ways, and because of these teachers the way of truth will be maligned.

And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'”

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Juan de la Cruz was a Spanish monk recruited by his friend Teresa of Avila to help reform the Carmelite Order. When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; but Jesus said to him, “Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man?” When those who were around him saw what was coming, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple police, and the elders who had come for him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit? O my people, your leaders mislead you,

Government bulldozers are now tearing them down in China’s constant effort to suppress religion, but people are still building their little booths. Christian monasteries developed in much the same way; a solitary hermit would find a cave and go into hiding to pray, then other people would find out and want what that person had. Bishop Williams grew up on a farm in Virginia and attended seminary there, then joined the many American missionaries in China. After two years he was sent to Japan, and by 1866 he was chosen bishop of both countries; imagine having that much territory. By 1868 he concentrated on Japan and was relieved of his duties in China by 1874, replaced by Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky (Oct. 14). The ruins of a Benedictine men’s abbey, which succeeded St. Hilda’s “double monastery” for men and women at Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. Celtic Christianity was always Catholic, but the Church of the early Middle Ages was marked by regional distinctives as much as by uniformity, with noticeable differences in the British Isles. These regional practices included both spiritual and liturgical variations, including the proper date of Easter, which was especially problematic. To resolve the conflicts, St. Hilda, a highly respected diplomat and counselor, presided over a council at her abbey in Whitby, where she helped argue for the preservation of most local usage; but her position was voted down in favor of uniformity. Saints like Patrick, Columba and others, through their missionary efforts, had a profound influence among the clans of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Man, changing the way people saw themselves and their relationship with God – influences that did not extend southeast among the Saxons. Hilda became the defender of Celtic traditions. Their ultimate suppression was more political than theological; the Saxons could dominate their neighbors, and the synod reflected realities that came to define British political life. As if Rendel, Haiti didn’t have enough to deal with, deadly cholera has combined with Hurricane Matthew to wipe out 90% of the town of 25,000. Most survivors have fled, but those escaping have to cross this contaiminated river multiple times; the only community leaders left are the Roman Catholic priest and a few nurses who run a clinic that’s fast running out of supplies. THE LESSON
Luke 9:37-50 (NRSV)

On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met Jesus. Just then a man from the crowd shouted, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” Jesus answered, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples, “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”

Gian Lorenzo Bernini: The Ecstasy of St. Teresa. She is famous as a mystic who received fantastic visions, but there’s more to her than that; she was a missionary and administrator who founded 17 convents of Reformed or “discalced” (barefoot) Carmelites, whose ascetic piety provided the framework she felt was necessary to enable the sisters to develop true faith. (And yes, it may be true that she flew.) Let’s think about is the ecstasy this artwork tries to depict; what is our own experience of being transported by the love of God? Was it in music, writing, art, sacraments, mission? What makes you fly? Teresa wasn’t the only one; you’ve done it too.

From morning until evening he explained the matter to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets. Some were convinced by what he had said, while others refused to believe. So they disagreed with each other; and as they were leaving, Paul made one further statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah,

‘Go to this people and say,
You will indeed listen, but never understand,

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfil now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting.
