Morning Prayer 3.11.17, Saturday of Lent 1; Ember Day

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

Pope Francis said yesterday that he could see a way for the Roman Catholic Church to ordain married men, a move that would overturn more than a thousand years of Vatican insistence on an all-celibate male clergy. He pointed out that married men already serve Eastern Rite Catholics; women priests, however, are very doubtful, he said. Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Jesus doesn’t judge the Samaritan woman; she’s quite faithful, even though she’s female, belongs to the wrong tribe, has been married five times and now is living with a sixth man. John 4:1-26 (NRSV)

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John”—although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized—he left Judea and started back to Galilee. But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.

A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”

Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. When they’re really sick and they don’t know what to do, an awful lot of Americans choose the Mayo Clinic. William Mayo was born in England, the son of a famous chemist; he emigrated to America, worked as a pharmacist at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and worked his way west, as a tailor in Lafayette, Indiana and then obtaining a degree from the Indiana Medical College in LaPorte. Charles Menninger was the patriarch of a family of physicians and psychiatrists, and this feast day is unusual in including the whole family as Christians worthy of emulation. Charles founded the Menninger Hospitals and Foundation with his sons Karl and Will. Karl was noted for his holistic approach to brain and behavioral disorders, including the spiritual aspect. William is known for his use of bibliotherapy, his love of the Boy Scouts and his service in World War II as director of the Psychiatry Consultants Division for the Surgeon General of the Army, where he developed a reclassification system of mental illnesses, which greatly influenced the postwar Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals used today. By retirement he had risen to Brigadier General.

Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people.

William W. Mayo and his sons, William J. and Charles H., built St. Mary’s, the first general hospital in Minnesota, USA. After a devastating tornado struck in 1883, the Mayos partnered with the Roman Catholic Sisters of St. Francis to respond. Their new type of patient care emphasized the whole person, spiritually and physically.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Deuteronomy 8:11-20 (NRSV)

Take care that you do not forget the LORD your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you today. When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. Do not say to yourself, “My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today. Dr. Charles F. Menninger opened an outpatient clinic in Topeka, Kansas in the 1920s, treating all kinds of illnesses; his son Karl, a psychiatrist, persuaded him to concentrate on mental disorders. Another son, Will, joined the practice, and together they established new models of care, conducted research and advocated for more informed public policy for people with mental illness. Karl later wrote an influential book on the power of sin to destroy relationships and damage mental health. (homeoint.org)

As Jesus went about healing the sick as a sign of the reign of God come near, bless and guide all those inspired to the work of healing by your Holy Spirit, that they may follow his example for the sake of your kingdom and the health of your people; through the same Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which announced its closure and stopped admitting new students last July, is pursuing an affiliation with Union Theological Seminary in New York City, which would offer programs and certificates in Anglican Studies for Union seminarians. EDS, one of the smallest Episcopal seminaries, is quitting before its endowment, currently $53 million, runs out. It traces its roots to 1857 in Philadelphia and 1867 in Cambridge; perhaps its most famous alumnus is Jonathan Daniels, the seminarian and civil rights martyr murdered in Alabama in 1965. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wright, born in Georgia in 1872, relentlessly pursued higher education for herself and other African-Americans. She attended Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, then set off to South Carolina to found her own schools, which white arsonists twice burned down. She moved to friendlier territory in Denmark, S.C. and, with two colleagues, founded Voorhees College, which is still affiliated with The Episcopal Church today.

Evangelism ’17 Update: Reporting Improves, Fundraising Shoots Up, & the Vicar Confesses His Sins

Our fundraising has hit 56% of goal, or $20,000 of the $36,000 we need to be able to continue our ministry this year. Thank you!

Most of this week’s financial surge is accounting for pledges members made in past years that continue today. (We’ve improved our reporting system with the diocese and PayPal.) Thank you, longtime donors!

We’ve known all along our members are generous, and that our main job in fundraising is to reach all 3600 subscribers with our request: $10 per member per year; less if you need to, more if you can. Please take a moment to pray about it, then click here.

Subscriber money is how we’re educating student nurses in Liberia and Haiti – feeding and teaching schoolkids in Haiti and Brasilia – heating the homes and hearts of elders and children on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. These are great programs and we’re proud of what we do together to support them.

They have to believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit first of all – then they have to believe in us.

It’s an honor to be entrusted with your gifts, and empowered to act on your behalf in Haiti, Liberia, Brazil and on the Rez; in China, Korea, ANZ, India and Japan; in two languages. Like the Parable of the Sower, we scatter the seed – and we’re delighted with all the fertile ground we find.

But here’s something else. As the years mount up (since 2004) and our rosters of followers grow, I’ve come to realize in the past month that I’ve been thinking too small.

Not only have I been fearful of asking too much of you, I’ve been afraid to trust in the Lord to provide for this ministry according to our potential – and what we’ve already done.

But what parent, if a child asks for bread, gives her a stone?

This whole project was God’s idea. Then when I brought it up in prayer God said, “That’s an excellent idea. I nominate you!”

So now, in 2017, all these millions of page-views later, do I think God’s gonna leave us high and dry? You can see where this is going.

It’s my fault; I’ve been thinking too small. I confess this to God and to you my brothers and sisters. I have failed to trust. I have let myself be overcome by fear, despite the fact that “Fear not” appears 365 times in the Bible I’ve been reading every day these last 13 years.

This year we’re going to keep asking you for 10 bucks per person until we’ve got that much, and then we’ll quit. We’ll be in good shape with everything we need to keep operating at this level.

But next year we’re going to make a quantum leap in how we function. We’re going to hire an assistant vicar, build an internet radio station and make some more waves. Because this level – still too dependent on one person, me – is not where we should be. It’s not what God calls us to; at this rate I can’t even die or retire without losing everything we’ve built together. Volunteers can’t do it!

So of course we’ll need the budget to double. Even then we’ll be the least expensive ministry in all of Anglicanism.

No fooling, we’re bigger than 34 dioceses. (Based on “TEC Member & Attendance Totals, 2014-15” and our own public records.) Maybe we’re not supposed to say that out loud but it’s true.

Not one of those 34 functions on 36 grand a year. —-> I’ve been thinking too small. So I apologize to every one of you.

Next year, we’re hiring and we’re building.

The quantum leap we’re taking is one of faith, not of money; one of mission, not of empire; one of Good News, salvation, forgiveness and healing.

Next year, Jerusalem!

It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Big Sur, California has been cut off from civilization with the failure of this bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway, which may topple into the ocean at any moment. It’s some of the most scenic coastline in the world and attracts millions of tourists, but the 400 permanent residents pay a steep price to live there with only one escape route. Nearby Esalen Institute had to be evacuated, and the New Camaldoli Hermitage, a Roman Catholic monastery, has been closed to visitors (and income) for two months already. THE LESSONS
Deuteronomy 6:16-25 (NRSV)

Do not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. You must diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his decrees, and his statutes that he has commanded you. Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may go in and occupy the good land that the LORD swore to your ancestors to give you, thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has promised.

When your children ask you in time to come, “What is the meaning of the decrees and the statutes and the ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you?” then you shall say to your children, “We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Hebrews 2:1-10 (NRSV)

Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. For if the message declared through angels was valid, and every transgression or disobedience received a just penalty, how can we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was declared at first through the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, while God added his testimony by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to his will.

Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere,

“What are human beings that you are mindful of them,
or mortals, that you care for them?
You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned them with glory and honor,
subjecting all things under their feet.”

Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

Anna Cooper, born into slavery about 1859, was educated at St. Augustine’s University, married a professor, became an Episcopalian and had a long and distinguished career in education, civil rights and community organizing, especially in Washington, D.C. At age 65 she became the fourth African-American woman to earn a doctorate from the Sorbonne, Paris; at age 70 she became president of Freylinghuysen University and served until she was 82.

ODIORNE, Brian P., 21, PFC, US Army, Ware, MA, 1st Cavalry Division

Private 1st Class Brian P. Odiorne, of Ware, Massachusetts, was killed in Al Anbar province, Iraq, on February 20. His death was not combat related, but details of how he died have not been disclosed. Odiorne, 21, joined the Army in October 2015 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, since May 2016. He was trained as a cannon crew member. His decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Medal. He will be posthumously awarded the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal and Overseas Service Ribbon.

For Those in the Armed Forces of our Country

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
