THE LESSON
Luke 3:1-14 (NRSV)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'”

John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

Holy Women, Holy Men offered a concise yet sweeping overview of her life and times: 19th century Britain, rapid industrialization, creation of a new middle class, abandonment of the countryside, the squalor of urban slums – and cultural, religious and artistic reactions, including nostalgia for the distant past. Dante Rossetti started a Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; Christina wrote 500 devotional poems and is best known as the author of the Christmas carols “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Love Came Down at Christmas.”

Evangelism ’17: Our Internet Radio Startup

Beloved,

I have so much news to share that I must be concise. First, we are beginning a major new evangelistic push using internet radio; details below. Second, we continue to ask for your financial support for our current budget and services. We need another $12,000 to finish the year, and if you haven’t donated already (many have), we need your help; click here.

It isn’t expensive to start internet radio, and yesterday on Palm Sunday we engaged a provider at $20 a month. But it will cost money to do it right, the way we want it done and you do, and as the Lord deserves it to be done – principally for a professional project manager to oversee volunteer talent, programming and fundraising, following a business plan. We are moving into the beta stage; as we know more, we’ll announce it.

The start-up Daily Office Radio costs do not come out of this year’s budget, which is only $36,000. That’s where you come in. If you use our site on a regular basis – if you subscribe, then welcome and thank you for praying with us. Once a year we ask for $10 a subscriber (email or WordPress) – more if you can afford it, less if you can’t. Please pray about it – then click here. If you’ve already donated, thank you!

Now I’ll give you an overview of what all this means to us, to you and to me, as I see it. Why are we doing this? What is it all about?

First, we know as praying Christian people that using the Daily Office every day changes our lives. It transforms us as individuals, and it works even more when we’re part of a congregation; when we know people and are known by them, and can hear the voice of God in them.

It’s priceless. That’s why the Anglican Daily Office is part of John & Charles Wesley’s Methodism. They knew personally how the daily discipline of prayer deepens our relationship with God. Monks and nuns know it too; they developed it.

Thus as our effort on these websites has evolved the past 14 years, we have constantly sought to become more interactive, even as we have also sought to encourage each of our followers to be part of a Sunday and daily congregation where you live. We support the brick and mortar church – it IS the church – and we extend it beyond the walls by going online.

Anyone who can do websites can also do internet radio, and anyone who can do internet radio can also do internet TV – and we intend to do them all, quite frankly, because that is our charge from God. That is our vocation.

And as clearly as the Holy Spirit stopped me dead in my tracks back in August 2004, to “nominate me” to start up this website, she has called us to internet radio.

You don’t even have to take my word for it; ask everyone else we’ve bounced this off. We have an unmet need and a ready technology; let’s get to work.

I cannot count the times in the past month she has given me, Tom Welch and others the Holy Goosebumps to urge us along, and to support us every step of the way.

Listen to me testify here. I don’t know how else to say it.

Let me tell you one more thing: none of this would have happened without the prayers, nurture and support of our stellar Webcast Group. Seeing and hearing them every day, my ears are more open than ever to hearing the Lord when he calls. If he wants internet radio, and wants us to give it to him, then that’s what we do; enough said.

THE LESSON
John 10:1-18 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Women in India were discriminated against in every direction; denied formal education, ostracized as orphans and widows. Pandita Mary Ramabai set out to change that, but said the burden didn’t fall on her; “Christ bears it on his shoulders.”

Cadbury Cancels Easter: The British national Easter egg hunt, sponsored by the National Trust, sold naming rights years ago to a candymaker, which decided that it might sell more cheap chocolate bunnies this year if it got rid of Easter altogether. The move has been denounced by the prime minister and archbishops of Canterbury and York, and prompted calls for a boycott, but maybe the National Trust should have thought of this earlier. So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. Ms. Ramabai experienced first-hand the effects of India’s rigid caste system that placed discriminatory walls between social and racial groups, and devalued all women. Yet she fought back, first as a Hindu, then as a Christian; after she was widowed at a young age, she moved to London and worked with a group of Anglican nuns. On her return to India she opened a mission for abandoned widows and orphans in Mumbai, and translated the Bible into Marathi, a West Indian language.

Romans 7:13-25 (NRSV)

Did what is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, working death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am of the flesh, sold into slavery under sin. I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin.

The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going. The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,

Staff Sgt. Alexandria Mae Morrow, 25, was stationed in Mountain Home, Idaho. She died on March 22 in Southwest Asia while performing maintenance duties to support combat operations. “Those who knew her valued her love of life and art, her leadership, her skills and her passion,” said Col. Jefferson O’Donnell, 366th Fighter Wing commander. “Her actions and contributions as a weapons loader just in five months overseas, let alone seven years as a gunfighter, have set records for weapons employment in combat. We honor her for making the greatest sacrifice.”

Afghanistan: Total Deaths: 3,529

BONIFACE, Robert R., 34, SGT 1st Class, US Army, San Luis Obispo, CA, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group

Sgt. Boniface enlisted in the Army in March 2006 and went straight into Special Forces training after completing infantry basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was bestowed the coveted Green Beret on Jan. 14, 2010. He served as a Special Forces medical sergeant, considered to be the finest first-response/trauma medical technicians in the world. Boniface and his unit were in Afghanistan’s Logar Province, near the eastern border with Pakistan, supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. He is survived by his wife, Rebekah Boniface, and daughter, Mia Elia Boniface; and his parents, Elia and David Boniface. (SLO Tribune)

Evangelism ’17: A Retreat That Was Grace Upon Grace

Dear Friends,

Several of us have just returned from our Daily Office retreat in New Orleans, and I feel I should tell you about it – it’s the most vital part of our Evangelism ’17 Campaign.

Though we were just a very few, we somehow carried with us the essence of what our work for Jesus is about here; our joy in Jesus.

We had incredible fun in the Lord and in each other – yet some very powerful spiritual conversations also took place. Those one-on-one chats, and one or two group discussions, formed the heart of our retreat, along with daily worship; Mass with Mother Gwen and Father Jim was especially good. (You’d almost think I’ve learned to run one of these retreats.)

I spent time with David that I absolutely cherish; we were in an open-air market in one of the neighborhoods – jazz band, trinkets, creative people, dogs, a very pleasant afternoon. He and I discussed the most vital things, completely ourselves with each other, and what a joy that was. Plus I could say much the same about all the members who were with us. It was all real. Our foibles were hilarious. We lived the love the Christian life is supposed to be about!

How did this come to be? Are we special in some way?

Here’s my best explanation so far: it’s the power of the Office liturgy used daily that converts us, or as the ancients used to say, “perfects” us. I firmly believe Daily Office people – the Prayer Book Daily Office, long before Josh Thomas ever showed up – are special, that it’s the dailyness that does it.

In other words, Tom Cranmer and those Wesley Brothers were absolutely right. The monastics were right and are right. (But the Cranmer arrangement was exactly what people needed.)

Here at the Daily Office Network, we do it online. Okay, that’s our claim to fame; we even do it live on our webcasts. But the people we do it with generally started years before they found us. So we don’t claim credit for what the Lord has done for them. The practice of prayer has opened their souls enough for the Holy Spirit to work her wonders – and work them she does.

So I went to New Orleans pretty confident that despite logistical and travel ups and downs, we were going to have a good retreat. What I experienced was eye-opening, an unimagined joy.

Let me say right out, I didn’t do this. I cultivated a little ground and scattered some seed, but I sure wasn’t expecting a whole little Garden of Eden to pop up.

I have never seen such an example of Christian community as that instant little group in New Orleans. I have never lived among such a group. I suspect it compares, to some unknown degree, with the miraculous joy that occurred in the New Testament Church once they finally got it about Jesus – once the Holy Spirit bestowed her gifts.
