And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who from now on die in the Lord.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them.”

Wars created great difficulties for today’s saints. Bishop Sasaki, above, who also served as Primate, preserved apostolic succession and the independence of Nippon Sei Ko Kei after the Japanese government ordered all churches to consolidate during World War II. He was tortured and imprisoned, but NSKK survived and regrouped. It’s unique among Anglicans, the first national church aimed primarily at natives rather than Western expatriates, and was quick to achieve independence and self-sufficiency.

THE LESSONS
Ecclesiasticus 38:24-34 (NRSV)

The wisdom of the scribe depends on the opportunity of leisure;
only the one who has little business can become wise.
How can one become wise who handles the plow,
and who glories in the shaft of a goad,
who drives oxen and is occupied with their work,
and whose talk is about bulls?
He sets his heart on plowing furrows,
and he is careful about fodder for the heifers.
So it is with every artisan and master artisan
who labors by night as well as by day;
those who cut the signets of seals,
each is diligent in making a great variety;
they set their heart on painting a lifelike image,
and they are careful to finish their work.
So it is with the smith, sitting by the anvil,
intent on his iron-work;
the breath of the fire melts his flesh,
and he struggles with the heat of the furnace;
the sound of the hammer deafens his ears,
and his eyes are on the pattern of the object.
He sets his heart on finishing his handiwork,
and he is careful to complete its decoration.
So it is with the potter sitting at his work
and turning the wheel with his feet;
he is always deeply concerned over his products,
and he produces them in quantity.
He molds the clay with his arm
and makes it pliable with his feet;
he sets his heart to finish the glazing,
and he takes care in firing the kiln.

All these rely on their hands,
and all are skillful in their own work.
Without them no city can be inhabited,
and wherever they live, they will not go hungry.
Yet they are not sought out for the council of the people,
nor do they attain eminence in the public assembly.
They do not sit in the judge’s seat,
nor do they understand the decisions of the courts;
they cannot expound discipline or judgment,
and they are not found among the rulers.
But they maintain the fabric of the world,
and their concern is for the exercise of their trade.

How different the one who devotes himself
to the study of the law of the Most High!

Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation and tribe and language and people. Then another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Then another angel, a third, followed them, crying with a loud voice, “Those who worship the beast and its image, and receive a mark on their foreheads or on their hands, they will also drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured unmixed into the cup of his anger, and they will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image and for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and hold fast to the faith of Jesus.

He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”

Bishop Tsen was raised by Episcopal missionaries and after ordination worked with Canadian missioners in China. In 1948 he attended the Lambeth Conference in England, then arrived home and was put under house arrest by the Communist government, whose oppression of Christians, Jews and others continues today. Almighty God, we thank you for the faith and witness of Paul Sasaki, bishop in the Nippon Sei Ko Kai, tortured and imprisoned by his government, and Philip Tsen, leader of the Chinese Anglican Church, arrested for his faith. We pray that all Church leaders oppressed by hostile governments may be delivered by your mercy, and that by the power of the Holy Spirit we may be faithful to the Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For Our Country

Almighty God, you have given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech you that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. The demons begged Jesus not to order them to go back into the abyss.

The three-year-old Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg has been a million-ticket success with tourists in less-traveled Manitoba. But it has also run into complaints from First Nations leaders that it doesn’t contain an exhibit on them, after centuries of genocide and cultural destruction – the most important blemish on Canada’s human rights record. Curators say the entire museum is infused with First Nations’ reality, to which the indigenous people reply, “So where is it?” Today is Indigenous Peoples Day in many parts of the U.S.; let us pray they get this resolved. Jesus heals a man with a demon; the details of this story are what make it so fascinating. Why did Jesus not send the demons to the abyss? He had something else in mind. (Source unknown)

THE LESSON
Luke 8:26-39 (NRSV)

Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As Jesus stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me”—for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.

Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

Professor Scudder was a woman of strong commitments: to the social gospel; her prayer life; her scholarship and writing; and her intimate relationship with journalist and author Florence Converse. What used to be called a “Boston marriage” is now called “marriage.” (Today is also National Coming Out Day and Columbus Day, as well as the anniversary of Scudder’s death.)

Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?

“Queen of Katwe” is a new Disney movie based on a true story about a girl, Phiona Mutesi, in the Katwe slum of Kampala, Uganda who learns the game of chess at a church-run community center called the Sports Outreach Center, where she discovers she has a world-class talent. David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o are winning favorable reviews as the teacher and the girl’s mother – but many others in the cast are actual residents of Katwe, where most of the film was shot. The chess program is still running with more students pursuing the game, as photographer Julian Hattem found during a recent visit; these kids weren’t interested in having their pictures in The Washington Post when chess was so much more engrossing. The real Phiona Mutesi, who dropped out of primary school to earn money as a street vendor, has returned to school, played in three world Chess Olympiads, twice won Uganda’s National Junior Championships (including the Open category against male players) and been named one of Uganda’s first two Women Candidate Masters.

When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

The whole assembly kept silence, and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles.

St. Mary’s Cathedral, Memphis, Tennessee. It has helped the city respond to two major crises in its history; in addition to the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, in which Constance and other Sisters of Mary cared for the dying with such devotion, it was also the scene of a dramatic march after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. Clergy from many churches and synagogues gathered there for an emergency meeting, after which Dean William Dimmick picked up the processional cross and led the way to City Hall to ask the mayor to settle the sanitation workers’ strike which had brought King to the city. Dimmick’s heroic leadership led to a backlash among his white parishioners; half of them left and never went back, but the church was better for it. (originalmemphis.org)

“If I have rejoiced at the ruin of those who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook them—I have not let my mouth sin by asking for their lives with a curse—if those of my tent ever said, ‘O that we might be sated with his flesh!’—the stranger has not lodged in the street; I have opened my doors to the traveler—if I have concealed my transgressions as others do, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom, because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors—O that I had one to hear me! So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, became angry. He was angry at Job because he justified himself rather than God; he was angry also at Job’s three friends because they had found no answer, though they had declared Job to be in the wrong. Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job, because they were older than he. But when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouths of these three men, he became angry.

Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite answered: “I am young in years, and you are aged; therefore I was timid and afraid to declare my opinion to you. I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.’ But truly it is the spirit in a mortal, the breath of the Almighty, that makes for understanding. Fr. Aglipay was a Roman Catholic priest and Filipino nationalist at a time of rising patriotism and anti-colonialism in the Spanish-occupied islands. He was a republican, moderate politically, who defended the Spanish clergy from militant attacks, but the Spanish-dominated hierarchy would brook no dissent and excommunicated him. He gathered followers, including Isabelo de los Reyes, who formed the Philippine Independent Church (IFI) in 1902, and agreed to become its Supreme Bishop. IFI, a member of the World Council of Churches, is recognized by the Anglican Communion; some American clergy serve as honorary canons in the Philippine Church.

Collect for Labor Day

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect for the Renewal of Life

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our heart to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
