Evening Prayer 1.15.17, Second Sunday after Epiphany

I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.

Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb has died, the very successful president of California State University at Fullerton, the first Black woman to head a major research institution in the West. She was a cell biologist and had served as dean at two other schools, became a finalist for president of Hunter College in New York City, but was passed over due to pressure from politicians. Her grandfather had been born in slavery and she faced discrimination too; she started college at the University of Michigan but found that Black students weren’t allowed to live on campus, so she transferred. At Fullerton, then a commuter school, she built the first campus housing, created new engineering, computer and communication schools, pushed for increased minority admissions and campaigned for women in STEM fields. John 4:27-42 (NRSV)

Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that Jesus was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

This is said to be King David’s tomb on Mt. Zion, but both claims are problematical. The Biblical description of where Zion was is sufficiently vague, and the holy city has been built up and destroyed so much that no one really knows where the hill might have been; three different spots have been identified and claimed over its history. “Mt. Zion” has become a theological and literary device to refer to the city as a whole, and to heaven more generally; David’s tomb was lost eons ago, but pilgrims need a place to go and this location has a better claim than others. Morning Prayer 10.1.16, Remigius, Bishop of Rheims, c. 530

I am God and no mortal,
the Holy One in your midst,
and I will not come in wrath.

Israel buried former Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres yesterday with dozens of world leaders, including President Obama, in attendance. Peres was one of the founders of the nation in 1948; his mentor David Ben-Gurion is seen in a photo behind him. Peres held a succession of high government posts, including defense minister, and was largely responsible for building Israel’s homegrown weapons industry and developing its nuclear weapons. But he was also constant in his search for a peaceful accommodation with Israel’s Arab neighbors, and as foreign minister he secured a plan in 1993 for Palestinian self-government in part of the West Bank and Gaza, known as the Oslo Accords. When the agreement was signed at the White House with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Peres signed for Israel while his old rival Yitzhak Rabin, then the prime minister, got the big handshake photo op with Arafat. The next year all three of them won the Nobel Peace Prize. (Associated Press, 1984)

The Master of St. Gilles: St. Remigius Baptizes Clovis. Clovis was the king of the Franks, and his decision to be baptized in the Catholic religion had several effects; it helped put an end to the Arian heresy promoted by Germanic rulers, strengthened French independence and assisted Gregory the Great in his evangelistic efforts with the English. THE LESSONS
Numbers 11:1-23 (NRSV)

Now when the people complained in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes, the LORD heard it and his anger was kindled. Then the fire of the LORD burned against them, and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. But the people cried out to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire abated. So that place was called Taberah [Burning], because the fire of the LORD burned against them.

The rabble among them had a strong craving; and the Israelites also wept again, and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we used to eat in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.”

Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its color was like the color of gum resin. The people went around and gathered it, ground it in mills or beat it in mortars, then boiled it in pots and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna would fall with it.

Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, all at the entrances of their tents. Then the LORD became very angry, and Moses was displeased. So Moses said to the LORD, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? Did I conceive all this people? Did I give birth to them, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a sucking child,’ to the land that you promised on oath to their ancestors? Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they come weeping to me and say, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I am not able to carry all this people alone, for they are too heavy for me. And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wailed in the hearing of the LORD, saying, ‘If only we had meat to eat! The Mother of All Status Quos may be about to change at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, after more than a century of petty jealousy, bickering and occasional fistfights among the three denominations that claim it as the site of Christ’s tomb. At a joint news conference, representatives of the Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic and Roman Catholic Churches agreed to go forward with $3.5 million in repairs to keep the structure from falling down on their heads – which is what it has taken to get them to change. The work will start after Orthodox Easter in May, and each church will (of course) appoint its own architect – so the professionals can do the arguing and cage matches instead of the monks. Adoniram Judson in 1846. He and his wife Ann landed first in Calcutta, but found that neither the Indians nor the British wanted him to proselytize among the Hindus. So they moved on to Burma, where the dominant religion is Buddhism, and avoided overt evangelizing while he worked on his language studies and she made friends with the high-born and low in the marketplace, developing her own linguistic and social fluency. He did eventually make 18 converts after a dozen years, then war broke out between Britain and Burma; Judson was imprisoned and tortured for over a year before finally being released. Burma ceded some territory, the area was opened to Christian missionaries, and Judson’s work began to thrive – among the animists, not the Buddhists. However, his wife Ann died after all the hardships and separation, and his own health was damaged. He developed a lung disease, was advised to take a sea voyage as a cure and died aboard ship at 61, the first American ever to become a foreign missionary. (George Peter Alexander Healy)

Pharaoh’s magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, but they could not. There were gnats on both humans and animals. And the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God!”

We try to avoid partisan politics on our site. We don’t care how you vote and it’s not our job to tell you what to think. But then this happened where church and politics meet: Donald Trump held a campaign rally at Hickory, North Carolina on Monday and drew some protesters, as well as liberal Christian scrutiny because of where the rally was held: Lenoir-Rhyne University, which is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Yesterday an online activist group called Faithful America, organized by the National Council of Churches in 2004 as a religious version of MoveOn, sent out a petition condemning the candidate, the college and the ELCA Presiding Bishop’s comment, “We don’t cut off debate.” Meanwhile the Episcopal House of Bishops released a long-planned statement, which passed unanimously and didn’t mention any candidate or event, but called for prayer and a return to civility in U.S. political discourse – and a few conservative Episcopalians criticized the bishops, accusing them of political correctness. At least in Hickory no fistfights broke out. (Raleigh News & Observer)

If you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs. The river shall swarm with frogs; they shall come up into your palace, into your bedchamber and your bed, and into the houses of your officials and of your people, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls. 2 Corinthians 3:7-18 (NRSV)

Now if the ministry of death, chiseled in letters on stone tablets, came in glory so that the people of Israel could not gaze at Moses’ face because of the glory of his face, a glory now set aside, how much more will the ministry of the Spirit come in glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, much more does the ministry of justification abound in glory! Indeed, what once had glory has lost its glory because of the greater glory; for if what was set aside came through glory, much more has the permanent come in glory!

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Patrick was born in Great Britain, the son of a deacon and grandson of a priest. At age 16 he was carried off by Irish slave-traders and forced to work as a shepherd. He escaped five years later, returned to Britain and received Holy Orders.
