Evening Prayer 4.24.17, Genocide Remembrance

Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

Since our site originates in the United States, we begin tonight’s parade of perversity with the genocide of Native Americans. At Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1890, the U.S. Army slaughtered Lakotas without mercy or remorse, just one of countless examples of Europeans’ systematic destruction of  indigenous peoples in order to steal the better part of a continent. Nor is the racism against American Indians much improved since; #StandWithStandingRock.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1

To white and black Americans this image needs no explanation whatever. It’s the inside of a slave ship, with kidnapped human beings chained up and packed like sardines in the hold. The enslavement of West Africans does not fit the classic definition of genocide in its intent – slavers wanted their captives to survive so they could turn them into money – but in its effect: death by the millions. Almighty God, our Refuge and our Rock, your loving care knows no bounds and embraces all the peoples of the earth: Defend and protect those who fall victim to the forces of evil, and as we remember this day those who endured depredation and death because of who they were, not because of what they had done or failed to do, give us the courage to stand against hatred and oppression, and to seek the dignity and well-being of all for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, in whom you have reconciled the world to yourself; and who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Collect for Peace

Most holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgments, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior. Wisdom 1:16 – 2:1, 12-22 (NRSV)

But the ungodly by their words and deeds summoned death;
considering him a friend, they pined away
and made a covenant with him,
because they are fit to belong to his company.
For they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves,
“Short and sorrowful is our life,
and there is no remedy when a life comes to its end,
and no one has been known to return from Hades.

“Let us lie in wait for the righteous man,
because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions;
he reproaches us for sins against the law,
and accuses us of sins against our training.
He professes to have knowledge of God,
and calls himself a child of the Lord.
He became to us a reproof of our thoughts;
the very sight of him is a burden to us,

1 Peter 1:10-20 (NRSV)

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry, inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the subsequent glory. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look!

Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake.

Jeremiah 5:1-9 (NRSV)

Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,

yet they swear falsely.

Romans 2:25-3:18 (NRSV)

Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. So, if those who are uncircumcised keep the requirements of the law, will not their uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? Then those who are physically uncircumcised but keep the law will condemn you that have the written code and circumcision but break the law. For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical. Rather, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart—it is spiritual and not literal. Such a person receives praise not from others but from God.

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much, in every way. For in the first place the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Will their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Although everyone is a liar, let God be proved true, as it is written,

“So that you may be justified in your words,
and prevail in your judging.”

But if our injustice serves to confirm the justice of God, what should we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my falsehood God’s truthfulness abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not say (as some people slander us by saying that we say), “Let us do evil so that good may come”? Their condemnation is deserved!

What then? Are we any better off? No, not at all; for we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin, as it is written:

“There is no one who is righteous,
not even one;
there is no one who has understanding,
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned aside, together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness,
there is not even one.”
“Their throats are opened graves;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of vipers is under their lips.”
“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
ruin and misery are in their paths,
and the way of peace they have not known.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth. Not that I accept such human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. But I have a testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father has given me to complete, the very works that I am doing, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his form, and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent.

“You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify on my behalf. Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. I do not accept glory from human beings. But I know that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe when you accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

Patrick was born in Great Britain, the son of a deacon and grandson of a priest. At age 16 he was carried off by Irish slave-traders and forced to work as a shepherd. He escaped five years later, returned to Britain and received Holy Orders. Then he had a vision that he should go back to Ireland and instruct the people in the ways of Jesus Christ; becoming in the process the nation’s patron saint. (iconographer unknown)

Almighty God, in your providence you chose your servant Patrick to be the apostle of the Irish people, to bring those who were wandering in darkness and error to the true light and knowledge of you: Grant us so to walk in that light, that we may come at last to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Evening Prayer 2.25.17, John Roberts, Priest, 1949

Jesus said, “Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.”

The Falls Church (Episcopal) in Virginia is a large, prestigious parish which dates from American colonial days; George Washington was a church warden when the oldest extant building was erected in 1769. A town then grew up around the church and is now a sought-after suburb of Washington, D.C. That colonial building was erected by slaves, a fact predviously omitted from the parish history. Now they’ve decided to rectify that, with a ceremony February 11 dedicating a new plaque honoring the slave craftsmen and offering “gratitude and repentance.” This is part of a larger, long-running effort by the Episcopal Church to come to grips with its role in slavery and the slave trade. John Roberts was a priest and missionary among the Shoshone and Arapahoe Indians in Wyoming. He worked tirelessly establishing schools and churches from his arrival in 1883 to his death in 1949. Above in 1906, with students at his Fort Washakie Mission School for girls, which complemented a nearby government school for boys – raising a question, did the government not pay to educate girls?

Children, it is the last hour! As you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. From this we know that it is the last hour. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and all of you have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and you know that no lie comes from the truth. Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; everyone who confesses the Son has the Father also. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Abraham Lincoln, America’s greatest president, had a fraught relationship with the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, whose support was always tentative and conditional while his criticism was vehement and fierce – at least until Lincoln was able to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and make it stick amidst a Civil War. Then they developed a deep mutual respect, and finally met.
