The Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Gina Quattrochi has died, a labor lawyer with the New York State Nurses’ Association, who became alarmed by all the friends she lost to AIDS in the 1980s, joined the board of the AIDS Resource Center, and established Bailey House in New York City to provide housing for them, the first such agency in the USA. She became its director, served for 25 years, and grew its budget to $18 million and its caseload to 1800 persons in 3 locations. She persuaded policymakers that a lack of services like housing and case management led to more infections, and spurred them to action. CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. Bishop Rayford Ray of Northern Michigan celebrated the Eucharist Sunday with Deacon Carol Carson-Hull at Holy Innocents’, a thriving house church at Little Lake, where our chaplain Mother Gwen Hetler is one of the clergy. They meet at a funeral home in town in winter months because the area gets so much snow.

This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—or surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.

“No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

An epic battle over the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation arose in the 3rd century, lasted for hundreds of years and has never entirely gone away. A heresy known as Arianism rests on a single sentence in the Gospel of John where Jesus says, “The Father is greater than I” – and doctrine never results from a single line in Scripture. But Arius, a priest from Alexandria, took it to mean that Jesus was created by and subordinate to the Father, not his equal – though John’s own Gospel starts, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Hilary was one of the foremost thinkers to put down that train of thought, which would have led to a neglect of who Jesus was and what he did in salvation. Morning Prayer 7.24.16, Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.

Here is good news: St. Alban’s, Indianapolis, has turned an unused ballfield into the Swords to Plowshares Peace Garden, where it grows produce for food pantries and passersby, amid an existing display of crosses commemorating the city’s murder victims – 71 so far this year, most by gun violence in the Eastside neighborhood. A United Thank Offering grant helped establish the mini-farm, and the city’s chief of police attended the dedication. St. Alban’s parishioners come from all over the city, but the church is anchoring itself in the neighors’ pain and suffering, and offering practical help. Over 40 volunteers have already harvested 1200 pounds of early crops, with lots more to come. (The Rev. Deacon Mike Scime)

From morning until evening he explained the matter to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets. Some were convinced by what he had said, while others refused to believe. So they disagreed with each other; and as they were leaving, Paul made one further statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah,

He lived there two whole years at his own expense and welcomed all who came to him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

A home Eucharist was celebrated Friday night by Trinity Church, Kirksville, Missouri, in a relaxed, informal atmosphere that encouraged questions, sharing and dialogue – followed by free food, you can’t beat it. Sometimes people on the margins of a church don’t really want to step inside, but feel free to come to someone’s home and see what people are like. And longtime friends learn something new about each other; every picture on the wall and object in the room has a story, which owners are glad to tell. Best of all, it strips the service of all the accoutrements and helps people experience the essence of the Eucharist. (Maria L. Evans)

It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge; by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith.

China has about 60 million Christians, less than 5% of the population, who worship in churches recognized by the government as well as underground and house churches. Nevertheless, the government has cracked down hard on public displays of the cross, forcibly removing an estimated 1200 to 1700 from the tops and sides of church buildings in Zhejiang Province since 2015, with more to come in its ongoing campaign of intimidation. He supported the Anglo-Catholic movement, and that influence is still felt in many of his dioceses. The Christ Mass December 25, after the service but before the potluck dinner, at Holy Innocents’, a growing house church in Little Lake, Michigan. The celebrant, Mother Gwen Hetler (rear, standing), is our Chaplain; she holds an icon of their former Holy Innocents window, which travels with them wherever they go.

Behold, the dwelling of God is with humankind. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them, and be their God. Revelation 21:3

We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish your rule of justice, love and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Special Mention

Six years ago, Marine Gunnery SGT Eden Pearl sustained severe injuries from a roadside bomb exploding including a traumatic brain injury and burns over 90% of his body. He was said to have been the most severely wounded service member to have fought in the Afghanistan conflict and survived. Gunnery SGT Pearl endured multiple surgeries (mostly amputations), and seemingly unending skin grafts, as well as unimaginable pain for six years. Eden’s pain was finally relieved with his death on December 23rd. By his side were his wife, Alicia, and their daughter, Avery. Given his condition and prognosis, this was more of a Christmas Blessing.

Gunnery Sgt. Eden Pearl was wounded in 2009 and died last week.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
