Evening Prayer 4.11.17, Tuesday in Holy Week

Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Children being evacuated from North Park Elementary School yesterday in San Bernardino, California, where a middle-aged man with a grievance and a gun shot his wife to death – a teacher – plus a random 8-year-old, before taking his own life. It’s become routine when schools are locked down in emergencies to march children out holding hands, but no child should ever have to endure this; a minority of Americans value their gun rights more than children’s right to safety. Rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,

Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The soil beneath a public housing project in East Chicago, Indiana is contaminated with lead from an old industrial plant – so much lead that children haven’t been allowed to play outside for years. Now the city is trying to close the complex but having trouble relocating the residents; most have been placed elsewhere, but a few families are holding out for a decent offer. The city wants to move them across the state line to the south side of Chicago, with significantly higher gun violence, but parents don’t want their kids living there. Tearing down contaminated housing doesn’t increase the availability of low-cost alternatives; a city has to build more just to stay even. (Alyssa Schukar/The New York Times)

Guilty at Malheur: Four men were convicted Friday in the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon a year ago, including Duane Ehmer, above, striking a heroic pose as some kind of freedom fighter for the cameras. The government earlier failed to convict the ringleaders, so this trial was a consolation prize of sorts. Most important, it helps reestablish the rule of law in that part of Oregon, where we have members; the conspirators’ real crime was terrorizing a peaceful town, a county and the whole area they chose to attack. Simon Dewey: Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well. It’s a lesson about the righteousness of women, the inclusion of outcasts, and the universal Good News.

John 4:27-42 (NRSV)

Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that Jesus was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

In the runup to the U.S. Civil War, racist apologists for slavery claimed that Blacks were incapable of governing themselves: lacking intelligence, humanity and civilization. Here is James Theodore Holly’s learned refutation of that outrageous claim, published four years before he led a group of New Englanders who resettled in independent Haiti. He became the first Black bishop of The Episcopal Church in 1874, with jurisdiction extended to the Dominican Republic in 1897. “Ungovernable”? He established the biggest diocese in The Episcopal Church, bigger than anything White Americans built with a 200-year head start. Other large dioceses were extensively subdivided, of course, but they still do not rival Haiti in the affections of the people – nor in the mainland’s affection for them. U.S. Episcopalians come to Haiti from everywhere; some dioceses have taken on special responsibilities to assist with mission. The Church there is weak materially but strong in faith, and we reverence Bishop Holly, one of our greatest missionary bishops.

Most gracious God, by the calling of your servant James Theodore Holly you gave us our first bishop of African-American heritage. In his quest for life and freedom, he led your people from bondage into a new land and established the Church in Haiti. Mark Dukes: Janani Luwum. A few days before his death, the archbishop had protested government-sponsored arbitrary killings and disappearances, been arrested for treason and paraded before a stadium full of Idi Amin loyalists. The next day the government announced the Archbishop was killed in an automobile accident while trying to escape. Weeks later his family recovered the body, full of bullet holes. A group of women in Yakima, Washington get together every Tuesday to knit and crochet for a good cause: they make knockers out of yarn for women who have undergone mastectomies. They say the name makes people smile every time it comes up, which makes it easier to talk about a woman’s practical needs and to offer support. Wendy Walker, at top, is one of our webcasters and told us they were being interviewed this week for a feature story on the local news. (KNDO-TV)

Archbishop Luwum with the infamous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who had him gunned down for protesting government-sanctioned rape and murder. Uganda is the most Christian country in Africa, and Anglican archbishops are influential public figures valued by the government as long as they don’t cause trouble. Luwum told the truth about Amin, so the dictator eliminated him. The self-proclaimed King of Scotland was responsible for as many as 500,000 deaths.
