Evening Prayer 4.12.17, Wednesday in Holy Week

Jesus said, “The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.”

Eugene M. Lang has died, an accidental educational philanthropist in New York City. In 1985 he was asked to speak about business to sixth-graders at P.S. 121, a school with a lot of students in poverty. He encouraged them to stay in school, but few of them thought they could do it – so he promised that if they’d finish high school and go to college, he’d pay for it. God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,

Evening Prayer 4.11.17, Tuesday in Holy Week

Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Children being evacuated from North Park Elementary School yesterday in San Bernardino, California, where a middle-aged man with a grievance and a gun shot his wife to death – a teacher – plus a random 8-year-old, before taking his own life. It’s become routine when schools are locked down in emergencies to march children out holding hands, but no child should ever have to endure this; a minority of Americans value their gun rights more than children’s right to safety. Rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

God of all mercy,

Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The soil beneath a public housing project in East Chicago, Indiana is contaminated with lead from an old industrial plant – so much lead that children haven’t been allowed to play outside for years. Now the city is trying to close the complex but having trouble relocating the residents; most have been placed elsewhere, but a few families are holding out for a decent offer. The city wants to move them across the state line to the south side of Chicago, with significantly higher gun violence, but parents don’t want their kids living there. Tearing down contaminated housing doesn’t increase the availability of low-cost alternatives; a city has to build more just to stay even. (Alyssa Schukar/The New York Times)

When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus.

The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord—the King of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: “Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him. So the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify. It was also because they heard that he had performed this sign that the crowd went to meet him. The Pharisees then said to one another, “You see, you can do nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!”

When Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

Richard Upjohn designed the Church of the Holy Communion with and for William A. Muhlenberg, as well as a Sisters’ House next door for Anne Ayres, CHC. The parish thrived for a century, but by 1975 the Flatiron district was no longer residential and the church merged with two others nearby.
