GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.

John 8:33-47 (NRSV)

The Pharisees answered Jesus, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”

They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing what Abraham did, but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are indeed doing what your father does.” They said to him, “We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word. For if we have been united with Jesus in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

Dr. George Weinberg has died, a heterosexual American psychologist who coined the term “homophobia” to describe the fear, hatred and revulsion toward Gay men expressed by Straight male therapists. With one word in Society and the Healthy Homosexual, he shifted the “Gay problem” away from the minds, souls and relationships of Gay people to the intolerance and bigotry of violent opponents. The word has been criticized by LGBT theorists and anti-Gay bigots, who always insist they’re not afraid of Gay people, they simply blame them for the any-day-now collapse of Western civilization – so why not have them locked up, lobotomized, discriminated against, beaten up, allowed to waste away in epidemics and shot by the dozens in Orlando and Atlanta? Sorry, fundamentalists, the word is here to stay.

Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, was a reliable conservative until he started seeing what the right-wing government, backed by the United States, was doing to the poor, including death squads and torture. He was shot to death while celebrating Mass near his cathedral. Nine months later four Maryknoll sisters were killed by the army, and nine Jesuit priests were murdered in 1989, along with their housekeeper and her daughter. (Robert Lentz)

Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.

Australia isn’t alone in its draconian refugee policy; the United States locks up tens of thousands of people from Mexico, Central and South America and dumps them in substandard facilities, like this holding pen in Tucson where dozens of men sleep on the floor covered in bubble wrap, not even a proper blanket. A rally last week at the Indiana Statehouse against a bill creating a religious exemption to local anti-discrimination ordinances, allowing businesses to refuse to serve LGBTs. The bill, trumpeted to protect those who disapprove of same-sex marriage, doesn’t limit the type of business or specify what kinds of customers can be turned away; critics say anyone could be a target. It passed yesterday with all but five Republicans voting for it. Nineteen states already have similar laws, and more have been introduced. (John Steele)

Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. An all-night vigil last year at San Salvador Cathedral on the eve of the anniversary of Archbishop Romero’s murder. Pope Francis recently approved the title of martyr for Romero, a status that was blocked for several years by the previous pope, according to press reports.

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?'” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?'” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, was a reliable conservative until he started seeing what the right-wing government, backed by the United States, was doing to the poor, including death squads and torture. He was shot to death while celebrating Mass near his cathedral. Nine months later four Maryknoll sisters were killed by the army, and nine Jesuit priests were murdered in 1989. (Robert Lentz)

Miguel Hidalgo, considered the Father of Méxican (and all Central American) Independence, was a Jesuit priest and revolutionary commander. He twice defeated Spanish loyalist troops in battle and approached México City with a large army but stopped short, perhaps fearing the carnage that would result. This may have been the moral choice, but it was a tactical mistake which set back the revolution by 20 years; the Spaniards captured and executed him. His legacy is that he gave “criollas,” Amerindians and African slaves a vision and a voice of freedom. (Wikipedia)

The Leviathan was a mythical sea-monster of the Old Testament, said to live in Arctic waters and breathe fire when displeased. It was seldom or never depicted in classical Western art, so we chose this spectacular computer-based painting by Vyrilien on the fantasy website deviantart.com. The biggest difference in technique is that the artist uses pixels instead of paints.

Ninian was a bishop and monk who evangelized from England’s Lakes district to the Picts of northern Scotland. A disciple of St. Martin of Tours, he is said to have been ordained in Rome, thus embodying links between Celtic and Anglo-Roman Christianity. (source unknown)

Look with mercy, O God our Father, on all whose increasing years bring them weakness, distress, or isolation.
