The United Nations announced yesterday that hunger in South Sudan is now so widespread it is considered a famine, with a quarter million children malnourished and millions of adults in urgent need. The young nation is torn apart by civil war, with rival ethnic groups engaging in barbarities to control the oil money. John Henry Newman was a founder of the Oxford Movement and author of the famous Tract 90, which provoked a storm of controversy. He argued against “sola scriptura,” or taking the Bible as the only source of teaching authority. Eventually he fled to the Roman Catholic Church, though his relationships there were stormy too.

“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Wildfire swept through the Tennessee resort towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Monday night, torching over 100 buildings so far, including this condo development. The area is adjacent to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most beautiful areas in the United States. Three deaths and 14 injuries had been reported as of last night, as thousands scrambled to get away; fire lined the highway that’s the main escape route. The fire is the “result of human error,” according to one report, while very high winds and ongoing drought in the Southeastern USA are also to blame. (Grundy County Herald)

Advent is a four-week vigil prior to Christmas, a period of watchfulness, waiting and reflection, not only for the celebration of the birth of Christ but especially for his coming again. Each week we light another candle on our wreath as the time of Nativity draws closer; we lit the first one on Sunday.

1 Corinthians 4:1-16 (NRSV)

Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive commendation from God. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.

Back home after the Blue Cut fire a few days ago in Oak Hills, California. It burned 37,000 acres and destroyed 105 homes. With the fire 85% contained, the last evacuation orders were lifted Sunday night; meanwhile five other big fires continue to burn in other parts of the drought-afflicted state, with still more forest fires scattered across the West. The Temple curtain or veil was a sign of separation between God and humankind. Christ’s Crucifixion penetrated that barrier. And like any rending of garments in the Bible, it also signifies anguish and deep mourning. (artist unknown)

Matthew 27:45-54 (NRSV)

From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many. Fr. Huntington’s greatest international impact is his authorship of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, which sets out four broad bases on which the Anglican Communion discusses reunion with other Christian churches, and states a deep desire and commitment for the reunification of Christ’s Church. To reduce the Quadrilateral to its bullet points: the Scriptures, the Creeds, the Biblical sacraments, and the “historic episcopate, locally adapted.”

Drought is affecting an estimated 330 million people in 10 states in India, like this cotton field near Hyderabad. To make matters worse, politicians in Maharashtra have been allowed to build sugar factories, leading farmers to put their fields into sugar cane, one of the worst water-guzzling crops. Now reservoirs are empty, wells a thousand feet deep are running dry, groundwater is depleted, water has to be trucked in to cities and towns, farmers are in debt and losing their land, tens of thousands have left to try to find work in the cities, those who are left are losing hope and scores have committed suicide. Mark 8:11-26 (NRSV)

The Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side.

Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.” They said to one another, “It is because we have no bread.” And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” And they said to him, “Seven.” Then he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Can you see anything?” And the man looked up and said, “I can see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Then he sent him away to his home, saying, “Do not even go into the village.”
