Despite the election of Donald Trump, low-wage workers and labor unions are continuing to push for a much higher minimum wage, dubbed the Fight for $15. McDonald’s employees took to the streets in New York City, while in Detroit and Chicago, workers walked off the job in the busiest airports. The four-year-old movement has won bigger paychecks in California, New York and scores of cities. Andrew, Peter’s brother, was the first apostle called by Jesus. The historian Eusebius reports that Andrew went to Scythia in Asia Minor to conduct his mission, and this icon honors him as the First Ecumenical Patriarch of Contantinople. No photo is available of Specialist Ronald L. Murray Jr., who was killed in a non-combat incident in Kuwait last Thursday. He was deployed in fire support as part of the battle against the Islamic State and was killed in a vehicle accident. “He was an outstanding soldier with an infectious smile, and sense of humor that would brighten any room,” Col. Robert E. Lee Magee, commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, said in a statement.

Pfc. Tyler Iubelt, a motor transport operator, enlisted less than a year ago, on Nov. 23, 2015. His awards and decorations include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.

Juan Manuel Santos, the president of Colombia, with his wife Maria at a news conference at the Narino Palace in Bogotá Friday after he won the Nobel Peace Prize for trying to end his country’s 52-year-long civil war, an agreement narrowly rejected last Sunday by Colombian voters, who think the FARC rebels should be imprisoned instead of set free. The referendum’s failure tipped the scales toward renewed violence, but with a Nobel and the world’s approval in his hand, Santos seemed poised to mount a comeback. Meanwhile, major American newspapers are reporting today that many “no” voters were motivated by an anti-Gay campaign promoted months ago by Roman Catholic and fundamentalist leaders and right-wing politicians. If conservative voters wanted to punish Santos for Gay marriage (recently legalized by Colombia’s Supreme Court), voting down a peace agreement seems like a poor display of Christian belief. Pope Francis and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby sent out 19 pairs of bishops from their respective churches to pursue joint mission Tuesday, concluding several days of talks and worship about Anglican-Roman cooperation. Mott was an American student organizer, YMCA leader, proponent of interchurch missionary work and the leading advocate for the World Council of Churches. For that, he received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1946; Europe had just seen the end of a devastating war among Christian nations, and the Nobel Committee hoped that an international church council might help prevent another one.

There was other important news that happened yesterday besides the big debate, especially the signing of a peace treaty in Cartagena, Colombia between the government and FARC rebels. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Cuban President Raúl Castro and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon were there, along with other dignitaries; everyone wore white for peace. THE LESSON
Luke 5:12-26 (NRSV)

Once, when Jesus was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” Then Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do choose. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him. And he ordered him to tell no one. “Go,” he said, “and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them.” But now more than ever the word about Jesus spread abroad; many crowds would gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray.

One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting near by (they had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. Just then some men came, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus. When he saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, “Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.” Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God. Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”

Acts 13:1-12 (NRSV)

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the ruler, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they met a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet, named Bar-Jesus. He was with the proconsul, Serguis Paulus, an intelligent man who summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God. But the magician Elymas (for that is the translation of his name) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? And now listen—the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind for a while, unable to see the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he went about groping for someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.

Deacon Oakerhater’s name went through many transitions; from O-kuh-ha-tuh or “Making Medicine,” he added David as a Christian name and Pendleton in honor of his benefactor, a laywoman from Cincinnati. He was a Cheyenne warrior imprisoned by the U.S. government, an artist, sundancer and healer, and finally a peacemaker converted to the Christian faith with help from an Army captain and backers in the Diocese of Central New York. He founded schools and missions in Oklahoma and is known as a forerunner of modern Native American art. St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oklahoma City has a chapel dedicated to him. On Climate Change

Father and Creator, we bring to you the global climate crisis and our inability to accept it, despite the findings of scientists and the warnings of prophets. It’s become a soccer ball we kick around, a deadly game our politics can’t resolve and your people can’t understand. We seem to be destroying your earth in pursuit of open greed, which may cause our own extinction; more and more we live in a paralysis of fear. But God, you know what to do with paralytics such as us. So we come to you, confess our sins and beg you for your healing. We have no other life on earth but you. We’ve destroyed your forests, your mountains, your rivers and lakes; we’ve polluted the very air we breathe, the water that sustains us, the atmosphere that protects us from the sun. We’re dying of our own selfishness, God, and we need you as our savior. We don’t know how to subdue this planet without destroying it. The only commandment we’ve ever obeyed is being fruitful and multiplying, but now our lust is plain for all to see. We have but one hope left, that Jesus saves. Forgive us, Lord, for his sake, and sustain us through the loss of life to come. Amen.
