The Right Rev. Frederick H. Borsch has died, the former Bishop of Los Angeles and Dean of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University. He was known for his emphasis on social and racial justice and serving the poor; he built the diocesan Cathedral Center in Echo Park near downtown, and is seen above in 1988, listening intently as he walked the streets of Skid Row with one of his clergy, the Rev. Ezekiel 37:1-14 (NRSV)

The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.”

So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.

Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Sotirios Panalidis: St. Peter. In today’s lesson, which takes place just days after Christ’s resurrection, Peter addresses an excited crowd – and risks his own life – with amazing boldness and clarity. There’s a reason Jesus chose him to lead his Church; but it was only after the Resurrection that Peter came into his full powers as a person, a believer and leader. In this episode, the Holy Spirit has not yet come during Pentecost; Peter was on his own during these critical early days. “By faith in Jesus’ name, his name itself has made this man strong.”

Acts 3:11-26 (NRSV)

While (the lame beggar) clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s Portico, utterly astonished. When Peter saw it, he addressed the people, “You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you from your own people a prophet like me. You must listen to whatever he tells you. John 9:18-41 (NRSV)

The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! The childhood home of civil rights lawyer, priest and feminist icon Dr. Pauli Murray in Durham, North Carolina has just been named a National Historic Landmark, and the Diocese of North Carolina released this photo on Twitter. Built by her grandfather, a Civil War veteran, in 1898, the home is scheduled to open to the public in 2020.

Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?'” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?'” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Staff Sgt. Austin Bieren died a week ago while serving with security forces in northern Syria, the second American serviceman known to have died in Syria. The Department of Defense said he appeared to have died from natural causes in a non-combat situation. His mother Tracy Finck said joining the military had been her son’s plan from a young age. “He was amazing, kind, smart, always wanted to join the service,” she said. He leaves behind an “amazing” wife of six years, Rachel, sister Brianne Bieren and a nephew Jaren, “who he adored,” as well as parents Tracy and Jody Finck and John and Amber Bieren. There are currently about 900 U.S. troops there providing support to Operation Inherent Resolve. Bieren was assigned to the 21st Space Wing at Colorado’s Peterson Air Force Base. Peterson’s Facebook page said Bieren “was a valuable and beloved member of our team and will be sorely missed. His dedication to his country was evident in his actions – he was a superb Airman.”

Stanley Dearman has died, the editor and publisher of the Neshoba Democrat, a weekly newspaper in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where three young civil rights workers were murdered in 1964. He campaigned tirelessly for justice in their murders, pressuring local and state police as well as the U.S. Department of Justice to continue their investigations until the killers were behind bars. Seven conspirators were convicted in 1967, but not the ringleader, Edgar Ray Killen, a sawmill operator and part-time preacher for Christ. In 2005 he was finally sent away for 60 years or life. The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which announced its closure and stopped admitting new students last July, is pursuing an affiliation with Union Theological Seminary in New York City, which would offer programs and certificates in Anglican Studies for Union seminarians. EDS, one of the smallest Episcopal seminaries, is quitting before its endowment, currently $53 million, runs out. It traces its roots to 1857 in Philadelphia and 1867 in Cambridge; perhaps its most famous alumnus is Jonathan Daniels, the seminarian and civil rights martyr murdered in Alabama in 1965. THE LESSON
John 1:19-28 (NRSV)

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wright, born in Georgia in 1872, relentlessly pursued higher education for herself and other African-Americans. She attended Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, then set off to South Carolina to found her own schools, which white arsonists twice burned down. She moved to friendlier territory in Denmark, S.C. and, with two colleagues, founded Voorhees College, which is still affiliated with The Episcopal Church today.

Jesus said, “Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.”

The Falls Church (Episcopal) in Virginia is a large, prestigious parish which dates from American colonial days; George Washington was a church warden when the oldest extant building was erected in 1769. A town then grew up around the church and is now a sought-after suburb of Washington, D.C. That colonial building was erected by slaves, a fact predviously omitted from the parish history. Now they’ve decided to rectify that, with a ceremony February 11 dedicating a new plaque honoring the slave craftsmen and offering “gratitude and repentance.” This is part of a larger, long-running effort by the Episcopal Church to come to grips with its role in slavery and the slave trade. John Roberts was a priest and missionary among the Shoshone and Arapahoe Indians in Wyoming. He worked tirelessly establishing schools and churches from his arrival in 1883 to his death in 1949. Above in 1906, with students at his Fort Washakie Mission School for girls, which complemented a nearby government school for boys – raising a question, did the government not pay to educate girls?
