Evening Prayer 4.23.17, Second Sunday of Easter

I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

A nurse has become the acting Surgeon General of the United States, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams. The surgeon general is the principal spokesperson for the Public Health Service and operational head of its Commissioned Corps of uniformed officers, who form a non-combatant branch of the military. She is the first nurse to ascend to the position without an M.D., though a previous surgeon general was both a physician and a nurse. Her most famous predecessor was Dr. C. Everett Koop in the 1980s, who goaded Ronald Reagan and the nation as a whole to respond adequately to the AIDS crisis; others have led campaigns against smoking, obesity and other threats to human health.

Chuck Piekarski, the pastry chef at the New York City nonprofit God’s Love We Deliver, recently turned out his 9,000,000th cake – because every tray that gets delivered to seriously ill people must have a bit of sweetness in it. He joined the agency in the early years of the AIDS crisis after answering a newspaper ad; he didn’t know it existed, though his own lover died of the disease four years earlier. He’s stayed ever since, as the group’s mission has grown to people with other illnesses, baking cakes and holding court, despite offers for more money somewhere else; this is his vocation, it’s where he wants to be. The saying is sure: whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task. Now a bishop must be above reproach, married only once, temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, an apt teacher, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way—for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.

Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money; they must hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them first be tested; then, if they prove themselves blameless, let them serve as deacons. Women likewise must be serious, not slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be married only once, and let them manage their children and their households well; for those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that, if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great:

Then he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted. Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,

When they realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd. So they left him and went away.

Thomas Bray, an English country parson, was appointed by the Bishop of London to oversee Anglican parishes in the Maryland colony. He visited there once and took a lasting interest in the American Church, but his greatest influence was his founding two major missionary societies back home, for Promoting Christian Knowledge (1698) and for Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (1701), both still in existence and successful all over the world. The Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Gina Quattrochi has died, a labor lawyer with the New York State Nurses’ Association, who became alarmed by all the friends she lost to AIDS in the 1980s, joined the board of the AIDS Resource Center, and established Bailey House in New York City to provide housing for them, the first such agency in the USA. She became its director, served for 25 years, and grew its budget to $18 million and its caseload to 1800 persons in 3 locations. She persuaded policymakers that a lack of services like housing and case management led to more infections, and spurred them to action. Bishop Rayford Ray of Northern Michigan celebrated the Eucharist Sunday with Deacon Carol Carson-Hull at Holy Innocents’, a thriving house church at Little Lake, where our chaplain Mother Gwen Hetler is one of the clergy. This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—or surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.

An epic battle over the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation arose in the 3rd century, lasted for hundreds of years and has never entirely gone away. A heresy known as Arianism rests on a single sentence in the Gospel of John where Jesus says, “The Father is greater than I” – and doctrine never results from a single line in Scripture. But Arius, a priest from Alexandria, took it to mean that Jesus was created by and subordinate to the Father, not his equal – though John’s own Gospel starts, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Hilary was one of the foremost thinkers to put down that train of thought, which would have led to a neglect of who Jesus was and what he did in salvation. Evening Prayer 12.1.16, Nicholas Ferrar, Deacon of Little Gidding, 1637

He is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.

This was the church Nicholas Ferrar took over when his family, having suffered financial losses, bought the decrepit manor house at the abandoned village of Little Gidding in Huntingdonshire. It’s tiny – all choir, no nave, little bitty sanctuary – but it was a perfect fit; they sat in their pews facing each other and read the entire Psalter every day. Nicholas Ferrer courted danger when he founded a family-based religious community at Little Gidding in Protestant England; it reminded Puritans of the monasteries they’d come to hate for their wealth, power and corruption – and out of that conflict would come a civil war. Yet his little band lived in poverty, gentleness and harmony, educated village children and pursued a life of devotion. For the Mission of the Church

Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to reconcile the world to yourself: We praise and bless you for those whom you have sent in the power of the Spirit to preach the Gospel to all nations. Nicholas Ferrar and George Herbert windows at Herbert’s parish church, St. Andrew’s, Bemerton in Wiltshire; they were best friends at Cambridge and obtained livings two miles apart with Ferrar at Little Gidding. Ferrar, who did bookbinding, was the man Herbert entrusted with his manuscript of “The Temple,” with instructions to publish it if Ferrar thought it might help some poor soul, but to burn it if he did not. It went through eight printings  and established Herbert as a major poet. But Ferrar is well beloved on his own, for forming the Christian community at Little Gidding with his family and close friends. It’s considered a forerunner of re-establishing monastic orders in Anglicanism after the Reformation. Puritans criticized Ferrar for his “Protestant nunnery,” while King Charles I hid out there once after a disastrous defeat in the Civil War. (Wikipedia)

A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

A massive, drug-fueled outbreak of HIV took place last December in tiny Austin, Indiana, alarming health officials and reaching the ears of then-Gov. Mike Pence. Experts urged him to declare a public health emergency and order a needle exchange program, which is otherwise illegal under state law. For three months and hundreds of viral infections, the governor said only that he was “praying about what to do.” Finally he called the county sheriff, who told him to get going on the needle exchange, and the next day Pence announced he would do so. Still, the kinder act seems to belong to this unnamed church, which opened itself to local criticism for “enabling addicts to stay addicted” instead of praise for saving lives. Since the program started and gained acceptance among the addicts, the HIV rate has dropped back down to normal, one or two cases a year. It turns out that a high percentage of young adults in town are hooked on synthetic opiates, and when the drug manufacturer changed the formula to prevent addicts from snorting it, they started shooting up instead – in a state where possessing one syringe without a prescription is a crime. So after they shot up themselves, they washed off the needle in the kitchen sink and passed it to the next person; in a month or two, hundreds of cases of HIV. (Aaron Borton/The New York Times)

THE LESSON
John 4:1-26 (NRSV)

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John”—although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized—he left Judea and started back to Galilee. But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.

A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”

Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. For those who suffer for the sake of Conscience

O God our Father, whose Son forgave his enemies while he was suffering shame and death: Strengthen those who suffer for the sake of conscience; when they are accused, save them from speaking in hate; when they are rejected, save them from bitterness; when they are imprisoned, save them from despair; and to us your servants, give grace to respect their witness and to discern the truth, that our society may be cleansed and strengthened. This we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, our merciful and righteous Judge. Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
