Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.

Episcopalians joined other interfaith leaders outside the Indiana governor’s office yesterday to press for passage of a hate crimes bill, in this era of increasing intolerance. Indiana is one of only five states to lack some kind of bias-related crime statute; a bill failed again in the state Senate but is still alive in the House. (Megan McConnell)

Macrina, born rich, chose to be poor, and established one of the first Christian communities on the family estate in Pontus, Cappodocia. She greatly influenced her brothers Gregory, Basil the Great, Peter and Naucratios; three of them became bishops and saints. St. Chad, one of four brothers dedicated to the Church, was trained in the Celtic tradition by St. Aidan. He was an abbot, later appointed Bishop of York. When a new Archbishop of Canterbury showed up, insisting on Roman conformity in ordination, Chad offered to resign. We chose this work by Rembrandt, called Jesus Driving the Merchants from the Temple, to illustrate the following, entirely different story because of what they have in common: Jesus criticizing societal norms in a fairly extreme fashion. In the Temple he lashed out at a corrupt religious practice; in the following speech he aims his verbal fire at individuals. Today’s Christians tend to cheer the first story and cringe at the second; collectively it’s our turn to be rebuked.

THE LESSON
Matthew 5:27-37 (NRSV)

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. St. Polycarp learned about Jesus from St. John the Evangelist, who taught him and made him Bishop of Smyrna in present-day Turkey. Therefore any extant writing by Polycarp is as faithful to the Gospel as it’s possible to get from someone who didn’t meet Jesus himself. We have Polycarp’s Letter to the Philippians, as documented by St. Irenaeus (d. 202), who was born in Smyrna and became Polycarp’s disciple. Thus we have a direct link to the disciple Jesus loved, making Polycarp one of three “Apostolic Fathers” or most reliable witnesses in post-apostolic history. This is of essential importance to us today; it is one thing to “believe what the Bible says,” but how do we know our Bible is authentic? Because Polycarp taught what John taught, and Polycarp taught it to Irenaeus, who left a wealth of records. (omhksea.org)

England’s General Synod tossed out its latest bishops’ report on sexuality and marriage Tuesday after it lost in the House of Clergy. According to British media, the report reaffirmed current policy against blessing same-sex marriage, which is legal in civil society, and against sexual activity within marriage for Gay and Lesbian clergy, but called for “a new tone” toward LGBTs. The decision is seen as another defeat for the Archbishop of Canterbury on his home turf. A folly called the Needle’s Eye on the Wentworth Woodhouse estate in North Yorkshire, England. The story is that the earl liked to brag about his driving prowess; he claimed he could drive his carriage and horses through the eye of a needle. Mark 10:17-31 (NRSV)

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.'” He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.”

Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving
