Citizens and politicians on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border are alarmed by a plan to store intermediate nuclear waste deep underground near Kincardine, Ontario, and their concern isn’t simply “not in my back yard.” The site is less than a mile from Lake Huron, part of the largest freshwater ecosystem in the world with 20% of the planet’s supply, which tens of millions of people depend on. And though geologists say the rocks underground are an ideal storage site, there hasn’t been a perfect human project since Christ rose from the dead. Contaminate the Great Lakes for 10,000 years and the lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan would look like child’s play. Notice the sign doesn’t even mention the word “nuclear.” (Steve Friess)
