Collect of the Day: The Holy Innocents
We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish your rule of justice, love and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
For Cities
Heavenly Father, in your Word you have given us a vision of that holy City to which the nations of the world bring their glory: Behold and visit, we pray, the cities of the earth. Renew the ties of mutual regard which form our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. A Green Beret on leave from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida is charged with shooting up a bar at this bowling alley in Rockford, Illinois Saturday night, killing three men and wounding three others, including two teenagers. Police said Sgt. Duke Webb, a Special Forces Assistant Operations and Intelligence officer assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), was visiting family in Rockford during the holidays; they did not know why he visited the bar and said he didn’t know the victims. Webb enlisted in 2008 and has been deployed four times to Afghanistan, with the most recent ending last July. He has twice been awarded the Bronze Star for his service in combat. He is now in jail without bond; his public defender mentioned PTSD and memory loss at his initial hearing Monday, and a medical evaluation is pending. (Scott P. Yates/Rockford Register Star)
