Power lines are being blamed for the Saddle Ridge wildfire in Southern California, officials said, with investigators focusing on a high-voltage transmission tower owned by SoCal Edison. One person was killed and others injured in the fire, which covered 8400 acres (13 square miles), destroyed 17 buildings and damaged dozens more. Power lines were also blamed for the deadly Paradise fire in Northern California a year ago, which killed 85 people and destroyed the town. Last week the electric utility serving that part of the state cut power to 2 million people, trying to prevent a recurrence; Pacific Gas & Electric said the blackouts worked as intended, but other experts said it was impossible to prove.
