The Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been awarded to three scientists for their discoveries in the development of renewable lithium-ion batteries, making possible portable phones, pacemakers and long-distance electric cars. The winners are German-born John B. Goodenough at the University of Texas; British-born M. Stanley Whittingham of SUNY-Binghamton; and Japan’s Akira Yoshino of Asahi Kasei Corp. and Meijo University.
