50 Migrants Rescued off Libya SOS Mediterranee & Doctors Without Borders.Renata Brito AP

Fifty wet, cold, sick and very lucky migrants in an overloaded rubber raft were rescued yesterday in a joint operation by charity organizations SOS Mediterranée and Doctors Without Borders about 15 miles off the coast of Libya. The rescue groups received an email – not even a text! – from a rescue hotline called Alarm Phone. Libyan, Italian and Maltese officials didn’t answer, according to a reporter who witnessed the efforts; private rescue efforts like this often lead to long standoffs with European countries reluctant to accept the victims.
