Once On This Island was the surprise winner of Best Musical Revival at Broadway’s Tony Awards Sunday night, a transformative, theater-filling restaging of the 1990 fable about a poor girl and a rich boy in the West Indies. The score was re-orchestrated with instruments made from found objects, and the audience was immersed in the Caribbean setting, made all the more poignant by the massive destruction and suffering the islands suffered last year with twin category-5 hurricanes. Tragedy ensues, but This Island is teeming with life. (Sara Krulwich/The New York Times)
