Paige Patterson, who led the 1979 conservative takeover of the U.S. Southern Baptist Convention, is being widely criticized for remarks he made years ago that St. Paul’s instruction that wives should submit to their husbands outweighs every other fact of their marriage, including domestic violence. This is the central problem with fundamentalism: its favorite proof-texts lead directly to grave injustices which God abhors. For over a century mainstream Christian leaders, including bishops worldwide, have failed to defend the faith against heresy, while giving lip service to every heresy-fighting saint of the Early Church. St. Paul said husbands should submit to their wives too, but Southern Baptists have edited that out of their Bibles for an ideology of male dominance. (Adelle M. Banks)
