One of the great musicians of the anti-apartheid movement has died, singer-songwriter and Stimela founder Ray Phori. He had songs banned from the radio but won gold and platinum records, South African Music Awards and Grammys; he was a major contributor to Paul Simon’s 1986 Album of the Year “Graceland” and toured worldwide. The African National Congress said in a statement, “Phiri was a voice for the voiceless and a legend of our time. An immensely gifted composer, vocalist and guitarist, he breathed consciousness and agitated thoughts of freedom through his music.” Above: onstage in Johannesburg, 2007.
