Our favorite photograph of our favorite bishop, Catherine M. Waynick of Indianapolis. She’s softspoken, without guile, gentle and persuasive, a strong leader who guided her united diocese through Anglicanism’s worldwide schism of 2003 with barely a scratch. Her diocese is a happy place, and has been throughout her tenure. Her successor, Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, will make history tomorrow as the first American woman bishop to succeed a woman bishop because Cate gave voters the confidence to do it, that it wasn’t necessary to elect a man to “balance things out,” so delegates could go ahead and elect whoever was best for the job.
