Eugene M. Lang has died, an accidental educational philanthropist in New York City. In 1985 he was asked to speak about business at P.S. 121, a middle school with a lot of students in poverty. He encouraged them to stay in school, but none of them thought they could do it – so he promised that if they’d finish high school and go to college, he’d pay for it. These are the kids in that first class who did – but many more students came to follow. (Chester Higgins, Jr./The New York Times)
