E. Clinton Bamberger has died, an American lawyer who established the right of defendants to exculpatory evidence discovered by prosecutors, known as the Brady Rule. Ironically, he lost that case because the Supreme Court refused to grant his client a new trial, even as it established that his original trial was tainted. Bamberger was the first director of the Legal Services Corporation established by Congress under President Johnson; a Roman Catholic, he worked his entire life to provide justice for ordinary people.
