My home parish buried Dr. Jonathan Amy yesterday, a chemical engineer and professor at Purdue University who wasn’t famous for much but doing good. He was an innovator in the field of chemical instrumentation – the university named a facility and a professorship for him – founded his township fire department, developed a subdivision and generally did everything he could to serve St. John’s, Lafayette, Indiana and the rest of humanity. He was brilliant so routinely that he was easy to take for granted – but here is why we single him out: he was just the sort of thoughtful, competent layperson on whom the Episcopal Church (and that parish) have always relied, and who are largely responsible for its continued success and viability. In John the Baptist’s terms, Jonathan Amy was a true friend of the bridegroom.

John 3:22-30 (NRSV)
After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there with them and baptized. John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because water was abundant there; and people kept coming and were being baptized—John, of course, had not yet been thrown into prison.
Now a discussion about purification arose between John’s disciples and a Jew. They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” John answered, “No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.’ He who has the bride is the bridegroom.
