Luke 7:28-35 (NRSV)
Jesus said, “I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (And all the people who heard this, including the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism. But by refusing to be baptized by him, the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves.) “To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? THE APOSTLES’ CREED

The city of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania sponsors a nightly “living Advent calendar” to draw people downtown. People gather in front of a house, a guest is chosen to knock on the door, and someone comes out to offer everyone treats. And what would it be without a wonderful Advent Band? Every place needs an Advent Band; and when your name is Bethlehem, you know what Advent’s for.

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
